Shockwaves reverberated through Eastern Europe tonight after Vladimir Putin boasted he could invade five NATO capitals inside two days.

This came amid new reports that almost 4,000 Russia troops are massing in Crimea close to Ukraine's mainland.

'If I wanted, Russian troops could not only be in Kiev in two days, but in Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw or Bucharest, too,' Putin was quoted as threatening, according to Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko.

All are former USSR or Soviet-bloc cities and apart from Ukraine their countries are now NATO and EU members.

I don’t either. Without a direct citation, it’s only hearsay. It’s very irresponsible for the headline to claim this was a direct quote without corroboration.

It’s Poroshenko claiming it. There would be self interest involved in trying to turn further public opinion against Russia.

Obamao does not believe in brinksmanship, a la Kennedy and the Cuban Missile crisis, or Reagan’s arms buildup.

Russian forces would get bogged down at the first liquor store.

Then he might as well stay there because there’d be nothing left for him or his troops.

I think even the Russians are going to start seeing Poopin for what he is in the not too distant future.

You don’t threaten this sort of thing. Does he really want to F U this century just the U. S. S. R. did the last one?

Things are stable. Leave well enough alone.

We spent 60 years with Russia controlling the Eastern Block.

Take your rusty old curtain and cram it up you A Poopin.

". . . according to Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko."

Candyman is a BS artist just like Caliph Obama, I don't believe a thing the jerk says. He's the same guy who said he'd negotiate with Eastern Ukraine regions right after he was elected then declared the start of the "ATO" a few days later.

He says whatever he thinks will make it more likely that other countries will throw good money after bad in Ukraine.

"Then cut off and destroyed on the third day"

By who?

Are you suggesting the combined European armies could repel the Russian Army?

Not likely.

The numbers mismatch would dictate the outcome. Not only that, there is not much technology gap between what the Russian forces have in the field, and what Germany has in the field.

Putin is doing a great job all by himself of turning opinion against Russia.

".the Polish army has 900 modern tanks including German made Leopard IIs to reteach the Russians not to mess with Poland. "

Isn't that about 900 tanks total?

Many older T-72's from the Russians?

after 250 years of deportations, executions and betrayals the Poles would tear them to pieces, literally.

The Russians aren’t known for tactical superiority but NUMERICAL superiority. That’s the way they’ve fought in the past, sometimes with a gun to the backs of the heads of their own soldiers . Something is percolating and I’m just waiting for the Chinese to pipe up now. The Chinese did just open a India-China zone with negotiations about borders yesterday...... Obama is so out of his environment with REAL leaders.

Puhllease, the Russian army is just as corrupt and incompetent as it has always been.

They are good at hand building a few decent pieces of equipment for select units: the rest is junk. To say nothing of their extensive infantry training building dachas for the officer corps.

This article from Polish newspaper claims Russia has already suffered 2,000 KIA fighting in Ukraine. link

Sounds high to me, but probably not by much.

And that was fighting the Ukrainian army and irregulars.

They don't have that kind of numerical superiority anymore: I doubt they could even mobilize reserves very quickly: the Russian Army has several hundred thousand men on paper-- How many are in Central Asia or the Far East? How many even lack any significant transport?

The Polish army alone (when mobilized) would be larger that the whole Russian southern military district.

They could get to five capitals in two days.

Staying there is another issue.

About 250 Leopards. The T-72's are completely rebuilt with Polish engines and trannies, new turrets, NATO standard 120mm or 105mm guns, laser sights, etc.

Nothing to look down on compared to Russian equipment.
