Enterovirus D68 is likely coming -- if it hasn't already -- to a state near you.

Since mid-August, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had confirmed 140 cases of respiratory illness caused by Enterovirus D68 in 16 states: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

New Jersey also has confirmed a case of EV-D68, according to Donna Leusner, director of communications for the New Jersey Department of Health.

And "in the upcoming weeks, more states will have confirmed cases of EV-D68 infection," the CDC said in a statement Wednesday.

"Several states are investigating clusters of people with severe respiratory illness, and specimens are still being tested for EV-D68. It can take a while to test specimens and obtain lab results... These increases will not necessarily reflect changes in real time, or mean that the situation is getting worse."

Canadian health officials have confirmed three cases of Enterovirus D68 in British Columbia. A fourth suspected case from a patient with severe respiratory illness is still under investigation...

My understanding is that the human immune system is taxed by both bacteria and viruses - therefore, antibiotics control the bacteria infections/fight while leaving the human immune system to concentrate wholly on the viral.

Everyone understands that antibiotics are for bacterial infections.

However, for a virus to mutate - the host has to be compromised in some manner or have something present to force that mutation. The US society is so bent on medications to alter mood, weight, sleep, etc that at some point the immune system is compromised. Most people have a “gut” issue where the immune system starts and recently “pro and pre biotics” have greatly aided in people NOT getting sick.

Again, the US diet and food processing - especially the meat supply - stinks in the US (or the reliance of other nations to provide that for us - i.e. China).

Its in Arkansas....not confirmed by CDC, but its here. Arkansas Children’s hospital already has had a few on vent, but were released this AM. No deaths so far but it makes asmatic children VERY sick. I found out during my 5yo’s checkup from my pediatrician. He blames the illegals. He told us to NOT touch your face, open all doors/push buttons with a hankerchief or towel...and wash hands religiously. The not-touching-your-face deal is HARD to do.

Bronchospasms ? Think I caught this back in the spring. Was on a greyhound bus with a sick person out of Long Beach who had a long phone conversation with a friend while he was obviously sick. Had those bronchospasms for a couple of weeks. They were nasty. Felt like you could not breath during the spasm. Voice was horse for weeks too. Never ever had those spasms before my entire life.

No. If you have a viral infection, without having developed a secondary bacterial infection, taking antibiotics will not only not help your body, your immune system fight off the virus, it can actually negatively impact those helpful bacteria in your gut and make you more susceptible to future bacterial infections.

Everyone understands that antibiotics are for bacterial infections.

Yes and no. A lot of people think antibiotics are effective against viruses. Many people do not know the differences between diseases caused by viruses vs. those caused by bacteria vs. those caused by parasitic infections like Malaria.

However, for a virus to mutate - the host has to be compromised in some manner or have something present to force that mutation. No. To paraphrase that car insurance commercial; “That’s not how this works; this is not how any of this works. : ),

Science Today: Virus Mutation | California Academy of Sciences

Note that the “Spanish Flu” influenza virus mutated well before the advent of antibiotics and most of the people who died from it were young and otherwise healthy.
