Sorry, I wonder if you mean why the muffs. They cut off at the sound of the shot and then back on. Turned up all they way is the best way to use them.

And then I posted it wrong.

The best way to repel a home invasion is to get a border collie. They’ll intercept the intruders, tie them up, call 9/11 and deal with the police. You can snooze through the whole thing.

“...tube and nail for gutters..”

I think they are made of aluminum. The best and hardest nail is a ‘Pole Barn’ nail. They come is lengths up to 8” and are difficult to saw through even with a sawzall. Almost impossible to pull out with a crowbar. I’ve tried.

"Buy a can of wasp hornet spray in the hardware store or the supermarket, keep it by your bedside or the floor," he said. "It's more powerful than police Mace.

.40 cal beats wasp spray.

In my neighborhood in the past 25 years as far as violenent crime goes a mother and her daughter were chopped up { done by one of the next up on Tenn Death Row} and in another crime a man was found dead sitting on the church steps by the school bus driver. He was murdered elsewhere for his SS check a few miles away and left there.

But in a neighborhood in Knoxville close to a all night walk in store I once worked out one of the most brutal double murder/rape/torture in state history took place. No place is safe now.

I'm old enough to remember when you approached a rural house and they didn't expect you or know who you were you yelled Hello House from a distance all were comfortable with.

I remember when I was about 13 two guys in a car pulled in at the house. I was upstairs and grabbed the shotgun and could see down into the car. I saw a bunch of stuff covered with blankets in the back seat. It was to Bubbas who never saw a day in thee woods in their life. Mom through a window asked what did they want. They said they were looking for a place to go hunting. Mom said "it's not here now git". No doubt in my mind they were looking for a home to break into. We had been cleaned out once by burglars. Dad and I afterward built a mechanical switching alarm system that would wake up the dead LOL. Nice good loud motor driven siren.

You can get them from about $40 up to over $300. It is best to try to get a fit that completely covers your ears. The cheapest still cut off but have less protection.

For long-term competition use the expensive ones are worth it. For trying out the concept use your own judgement.

I suspect it would work well, unless the nail is aluminum. Or if the tube and the nail are two different metals.

That’s what the scumbags are doing in Houston now. They ring the door bell and if no one comes to the door, they break in and grab stuff and haul butt out of there. If someone comes to the door they moved on to another house.

The police will tell you, go to the door but don’t open it. Have your phone in your had and be ready to call the police. I like being here because i know that the police is not more than 3 minutes away. I am not a police hater.

On a good night a deputy may be less than five minutes out. On a bad one he can be twenty minutes out depending on shift coverage. It’s a large county size wise with usually 2-4 deputies covering it. Same with ambulance. The cops around here don’t bother me any. I’ve interacted with several of the deputies before. They’re just doing their job and live in the community.

I guess I should describe my personal defense arrangements. I live in a rural area with no close neighbors. There are two entrances, both heavy duty metal doors with deadbolt locks.

Right beside my bed in the open is a Walther Model PP in .380. It and the spare mag right beside it are loaded with 90 grain HPs. I can reach it without even leaving the bed.

Even closer is a cluster of flashlights. The first one is a Leatherman, next is a Browning then six or seven other good ones, all having LED bulbs and all, even the cheapest is bright.

If I have a chance to sit up in bed I can reach a Browning HiPower with a Mec-Gar 15 round mag. Next to it is another Mec-Gar mag holding 20 rounds. They are both loaded with 115 gr Silvertips mainly because I got a good price on them years ago and they are about as good as any. In a bag in my bedroom are a dozen more mags some Mec-Gar, some original Browning 13 round mags and one a 30 round mag of unknown origins but it is a quality mag and works perfectly with all 30 rounds. These in the bag would probably never be used except in really odd situations.

Before a leave the bedroom is a Winchester Defender 12 gauge loaded with number 4 buckshot. Depending on what brand I use it will take 7 or 8 shells. Some brands of shells are longer than others. Because I have arthritis I added a plastick buttstock which also has a pistol grip. I find it much easier to handle with the pistol grip. I could take the rear stock off but that makes it unwieldy to me. Others say it is handy. It sure kicks without that butt stock.

In my other bedroom is Remington automatic which does not have a detacheable mag, but fully loaded with .22 lr high speed, it would be a fine weapon and it never fails, never has ever.

If I answer a door not really expecting trouble I always have a Walther model PP in .22LR in my hand. If for some reason I don’t have the little pistol, I have the aforementioned spear, swords, machetes, Khukri or black thorn.

If I am approached while I am outdoors I have a Start .40 cal. with two spare mags hidden where no one would ever suspect.

I am pretty much ready for anything up to maybe a dozen Ne-er do wells.

Pappy;

Your daughter needs more than to carry a knife. I doubt she has the skill, tenacity and violence of will to employ one with any effect on a male or males ( I don’t, and I am trained in the use thereof). A knife rather requires contact and a swim in a torrent of blood to be effective- showing one will likely result in escalation rather than a scurrying of rat feet as a fighting caliber sidearm tends to evoke.

I suggest you assure her security by a) getting her out of the situation b) getting her into a better one, c) training her in situational awareness and risk avoidance(professionally, as Dads don’t do justice for their women personally-to much emotional attachment between).

The most effective strategy involves the removal of the risk (exposure) from a threat (negative result).

At least, get her to walk home in a bunch of others-big Christian country boys preferably-chivalry still pervades our rural America (mostly).

Best;

I just ran across this new-fangled handgun safe that is easier (read “quicker) to access.
