Targeting Libertarians with Clever Humor…and Not-So-Clever Humor
Townhall.com ^ | September 15, 2014 | Daniel J. Mitchell

Posted on 09/15/2014 8:33:27 AM PDT by Kaslin

I’m very depressed that my beloved Georgia Bulldogs lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks. So instead of writing about a serious topic, we’re going to enjoy some laughs today by reviewing some new anti-libertarian humor.

I’m a libertarian, of course, as are all decent and humane people.

But I appreciate clever humor, even when I’m the target. This video about Somalia being a libertarian paradise, for instance, is an excellent example of political satire. It takes a stereotype and milks it for some great laughs.

I also have to tip my proverbial hat to the person who put together this image of libertarian utopia.

It’s misleading, of course, since libertarians either have no problem with local paramedic services or they believe in private contracting of such services. But for purposes of humor, this image is great satire since it combines the stereotype of libertarians being all about profit and the stereotype of no basic government services in a libertarian world.

If you liked the above image, here’s some additional anti-libertarian satire that is similarly amusing.

Now let’s look at some anti-libertarian humor that falls flat.

As I suggested above, political humor effective is effective when it seizes on something that is true and then applies that stereotype to an absurd situation.

But this next image makes no sense. It implies that there will be more violent, drug-related crime in the absence of prohibition.

But there’s lot of violence surrounding marijuana and other drugs precisely because they are illegal and that creates lucrative opportunities for sellers in the black market.

Simply stated, if you end drug prohibition, then criminal gangs and cartels will lose their markets.

If you don’t believe me, ask yourself why there was lots of violence during the Al Capone era in the 1920, whereas you don’t see Heineken and Anheuser-Busch engaging in shoot outs today.

Or let’s look at the issue from another perspective. What if the lifestyle fascists banned cigarettes. Right now, with cigarettes being legal, there’s no violence between Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds. But imagine what would happen if cigarettes went underground and their distribution was controlled by thugs? Of course there would be violence.

I’m not trying to turn this post into a lecture on drug prohibition, so I’ll stop here. But I did want to expose the intellectual vapidity of the person who put together the second image.

By the way, some of my libertarian friends complain when I share anti-libertarian humor. I have three responses.

1. I share lots of humor mocking statists and regular readers know that advocates of bigger government are my main targets.

2. Self-confident people should have the ability to laugh at themselves and libertarians (thanks in part to Obama) have ample reason to be confident of their ideas.

3. I’m more than happy to share pro-libertarian humor. The only problem is that I’ve only found a handful of examples.

Libertarian Jesus scolding modern statists.

This poster about confused statists.

The libertarian version of a sex fantasy.

So feel free to send any new material my way. All (good) political humor is appreciated.

There seem to be two libertarian parties or a huge campaign against them. Aren’t libertarians against big government and for more freedom. What is wrong with less government, less taxes, less micromanagement and more freedom?

Gotta admit. This is funny:

This morning my friend lucked out and was able to buy several cases of ammo.

On the way home he stopped at the gas station where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde was filling up her car at the next pump.

She looked at the ammo in the back of his pickup truck and said in a very sexy voice, “I’m a big believer in barter. Would you be interested in trading sex for ammo?”

He thought a few seconds and asked, “What kinda ammo ya got?”

The libertarian version of a sex fantasy.

I had some NSFW concerns. Here's a maximally work-and-family-friendly excerpt:

'This morning my friend lucked out and was able to buy several cases of ammo.

'She looked at the ammo in the back of my pickup truck and said in a very sexy voice, “I’m a big believer in barter. Would you be interested in trading s*x for ammo?”

'He thought a few seconds and asked, “What kinda ammo ya got?”'

Now that is funny.

Just perhaps not in the way the author intended.

If that were true then they would be conservatives, but let’s look at what they really are, and why their fantasy politics really result in more leftism.

Libertarians are not conservative, they are radical leftist except on economic issues.

Throw open the borders completely; only a rare individual (terrorist, disease carrier etc.) can be kept from freedom of movement through “political boundaries”, eliminate the Border Patrol and INS.

Homosexuals; total freedom in the military, gay marriage, adoption, child custody and everything else.

Abortion; zero restrictions or impediments full 9 months.

Pornography; no restraint, no restrictions.

Drugs; Meth, Heroin, Crack, and anything new that science and marketers can come up with, zero restrictions.

Advertising those drugs, prostitution, and pornography; zero restrictions.

Military Strength; minimal capabilities.

The comic hyperbole was doubtless intentional - but probably lost on those who hold the opposite extreme as factually correct.

They are also in favor of gay marriage (or any kind of marriage, no marriage, marriage to farm animals, whatever), abortion and drug use. They oppose the use of military force until the enemy is at your front door, regulation of industry and any kind of coerced association. In other words, you should be free to not be a part of any government if you don't want to, leading to this: "I live in this country, but am not American and don't accept any responsibility for anything or anyone but myself."

To me, Libertarianism is unworkable idiocy and anti-human. We are social creatures and always organize ourselves into social units of one type or another that cannot work without general acceptance. We ARE all Americans.

Libertarianism is also anti-faith. I am a Christian and believe that God is sovereign, and that His law is eternal and true. Libertarians believe that the individual is sovereign and that truth is, of course, relative.

To me, Libertarians are Liberals with lower taxes.

Indeed. Those are the last two words most people would associate with Libertarianism - “decent” and “humane”

But I’m sure the Libertarians see it differently.

If you aren’t libertarian, it’s probably because you either want to take other people’s stuff or control their lives. The author’s point was: decent people wouldn’t want to do either.

They oppose [...] regulation of industry

Sounds like a conservative position to me.

In other words, you should be free to not be a part of any government if you don't want to

What's your source for this claim about libertarians?

Libertarianism is also anti-faith. I am a Christian and believe that God is sovereign, and that His law is eternal and true. Libertarians believe that the individual is sovereign and that truth is, of course, relative.

Libertarianism is a political philosophy, and as such is entirely consistent with the belief that God is sovereign, His law is eternal and true - but it's the proper role of government to enforce only the subset of that law which defends individual rights.

What's your source for your claim about "most people"? You and all the statists you prefer to associate with?

Libertarians I have met have all been very bright people. Smart cookies, everyone one.

I have no doubt that they can give a well-reasoned explanation as to why drug addiction is decent and prostitution is humane.

By the way...the article itself laments the dearth of pro-libertarian humor, and the surplus of anti-libertarian humor.

Now this could be a strong indicator of the mass of opinion on the subject. Or, I suppose, it only means that most people with a sense of humor find Libertarianism worthy of mockery.

I just read there are right or left libertarians. It seems there is also a left wing of the GOP. Chris Christie attacked conservative Tom Tancredo in the Colorado primary for Governor so they are for liberalism, abortion, anti Christian, even anti American... They left me a long time ago. Around here Libertarians are anti-liberal, anti-big government and pro Freedom.

We are against homosexual marriage and abortion, and homosexuals in the military and eliminating the borders and such, we are conservatives.
