BILLIONAIRE HEDGE FUND MANAGER: Of All The Things That Are Likely, Nothing Is Scarier Than An Electromagnetic Pulse

Hedge fund managers often like to opine on various topics that are largely unrelated to investing.

In his latest lengthy quarterly letter to clients, Paul Singer of Elliott Management spent some time discussing a phenomenon that caught our attention and the attention of many others.

It's the danger posed by an electromagnetic pulse.

Singer writes that an electromagnetic pulse is the "risk that stands way above the rest in terms of the scope of potential damage adjusted for the likelihood of occurrence."

According to Singer, threats that are more manageable than an electromagnetic pulse include nuclear war and asteroids.

It's Always Something. (IAS)

Somewhere, somehow, the Islamists have people working on an EMP bomb for us. It will take everyone back to the 7th century.

There Will Be No Peace Until There Is No Islam.

Well, the sun could do it way more effectively than the Islamists. At any time. WIth no warning.

I suppose if you are a billionaire on paper, with most of your assets tied up in digits that are traded over the internet, and only have value because of the relationship of your digits to other digits owned by other people with whom you interact on the internet, you would think that an EMP attack is the scariest of all possible things.

Yes, I read “One Second After”, frightening. I always worry when my children travel 50 or more miles away about how we will get back together. My 19 year old is a dirt bike racer and frequently travels out of state to race.

Yup.

It's the one that convinced me to include antibiotics in my prepper stocks.

One Second After

"Months before publication, One Second After has already been cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book already being discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to destroy the entire United States, literally within one second. It is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warns could shatter America. In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future...and our end."

Has anyone ever created an EMP?

Sure, every atomic bomb creates one. The degree of damage depends on how high in the atmosphere it is detonated, and the details of the bomb design, but they all do it. The reason we know about it is because some of the early high-altitude tests in the Pacific knocked out some of the more primitive and robust electrical equipment of the 50's.

Years & years ago, I saw a documentary about the military working on an EMP gun.
I think some of the earliest nuke tests unexpectedly turned the lights off in Vegas.

We would have a warning, only minutes, but a warning. Preparation should be
done in advance so our grid would survive. As it is our grid is mostly unprotected.

The Soviet Union conducted a number of high altitude nuclear tesst with multiple megaton tonnage. The effects on communities nearby where studied and EMP damage was not as massive as currently being depicted.

“Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.” H.L. Mencken

First it was the Van Allen Belt. Now it’s the Plasmasphere. Given the threat to civilization by either a massive nuke generated EMP or a Carrington Event, maybe we should start calling it the Irwin Allen Belt.

There are at least a dozen ways the grid could be destroyed. Any of them will cause the same result.

Oh, I agree, this country is bombarded with “issues”, esp. under this administration. But, an EMP is a possibility, that we should be aware of, and attempt to at least be prepared of its consequences.
