Senate showdown: GOP frets over Harkin seat

Few states are more important than Iowa in the battle for the Senate this fall. But anxiety is rising within Republican ranks that deep-pocketed conservative donors and outside groups are not doing enough, as Democrats outspend them by millions of dollars to retain the seat of retiring liberal Sen. Tom Harkin.

Since GOP nominee Joni Ernst won the June primary, Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley and his allies have outspent Ernst and her supporters by more than $2.1 million, $9.2 million to $7 million. Democratic groups have reserved $10.8 million for the final six weeks of the race, compared to $8.3 million for Republican groups, according to sources tracking the air war.

Meanwhile, interest groups from the left are piling on. Two more plan to launch fresh attack ads against Ernst on Monday: The League of Conservation Voters has reserved $744,170 for the next two weeks, and Planned Parenthood Votes has reserved half a million dollars for the same period.

Republicans need to pick up six seats to flip control of the chamber — and with three a safe bet, Iowa is one of a handful of tossup races that could be majority makers for the GOP. The focus on the race comes as the political world descends on Iowa this weekend for the final Harkin Steak Fry, a Democratic cattle call for politicians from the Hawkeye State and beyond.

Oh, now they LIKE the Senate Conservatives Fund and the other outside groups, do they??

I think what's really going is they're worried that the NRSC will be forced to spend most of it's funds to secure "a republican senate" and their coffers will be drained for the next cycle while the "outside groups" will be flush with cash and the Establishment won't be able to outspend and "crush" its opponents.

The Establishment gets all its victories, then cry like babies that they had to (and have to) spend so much!

You’re overlooking the obvious: Ernst is an unapologetic Conservative.

“You’re overlooking the obvious: Ernst is an unapologetic Conservative.”

Right, and the NRSC probably doesn’t WANT to spend any money on her, especially since they now have to prop up ancient Pat Roberts in Kansas and their other Establishment candidates aren’t doing so well.

The RINOs are conflicted. They want the Senate but... Ernst is so, so “icky!”

Yes, that puts it very succinctly!

Mr. Braley appears to be a moderately inept candidate. Outspending Ms. Ernst roughly 5 - 4 is not going to make the difference. This is a probable Republican pick-up.

Tom Harkin is an unabashed communist and has been for 40 years. The people of Iowa love him. It won’t take much to get them to vote for an idiot like Braley. He’ll still work to send free stuff their way.

I don’t believe a vowel published by Leftico , a wholly owned division of the DRAT party.

That is because the GOPe’s would rather have a democrat than a true
conservative in the senate.

“On Tuesday night, Wal-Mart paid for a political focus group with 10 mothers in Des Moines who are likely to vote in November. Six of the women at the focus group — organized by Public Opinion Strategies and Purple Strategies — were leaning toward Braley, and four backed or leaned toward Ernst.”

Notice the slight of hand in this propaganda piece?

6 ‘lean’ toward the RAT, and 4 are backing or leaning to Ernst.

That could mean that 4 are solidly behind Ernst, and 6 are confused or undecided and said they might vote for the RAT.

One thing for sure, out of the 10 in the group NONE are solidly behind the RAT. If that was the case it would have been in the headline!

Although I am not close to being "deep pocketed" I would not give the GOP one penny. The GOP-e is more caustic to the Republic than electing a RAT. At least with a RAT in the seat I know exactly what I am going to get. With a GOP-e in the seat they will turn and twist to try and support their corporate masters AND the electorate that sent them to the District.

My solution - blow the District up and make the Reps and Senators live in their home districts/states and do all work on Internet conference links. In this day and age there is no reason for them to gather physically at the feet of their corporate masters in D.C. to be schmoozed, wined and dined for their influence - they should reside full time in their HOME OFFICES, CLOSE TO THOSE THAT ELECT THEM.

We no longer live in an age when one traveled to the District on horse and buggy and communications took weeks, not milliseconds.
