And on this day in 1944, my uncle's infantry battalion left its bivouac near Eupen and marched into the drizzle towards their objective: Düren. They made Zweifall by the end of the day, but Düren - or what was left of it - wasn't taken until 25 February 1945. What happened in that interval was the worst combat my uncle would ever experience- Cherbourg and Remagen notwithstanding.
