You are right, about 80% of the victims were male, making it more a homosexual phenomena. I was going from memory, but have checked.
A main point that I would like to stress though (after checking) is that the great majority of priests had nothing to do with this, and are unfairly and often purposely made out to be a pack of perverts.
Here are some stats from the John Jay Report:
From 1950 to 2002, a total of 10,667 individuals had made allegations of child sexual abuse against 4,392 priests in the USA, about 4% of all priests who served during the time covered by the study. Of these 4% accused, only 252 (5.7% of those accused) were convicted.
So only about 0.2% of priests serving in the US over a half century were convicted of any form of sexual abuse of a minor, and only a minority of them (100) merited prison sentences. This is in a society where about 20% of girls, and 5 to 10% of boys are victims of such abuse, overwhelmingly from people they know.
Out of 10,667 individuals who made allegations, only 52 allegations were in the category of “group or coerced sex”.
The number of alleged abuses increased in the 1960s, peaked in the 1970s, declined in the 1980s, and by the 1990s had returned to the levels of the 1950s.
According to the report, one-third of all of the accusations were made in 2002 and 2003, and another third of the allegations were reported between 1993 and 2001.
In summary, rates of sexual abuse of minors among priests were lower than the average in society, and forcible abuse was dramatically lower (less than one incident a year on average). Even these low rates reflect a surge during the period of the sexual revolution in US society (’65-’80), which by the 1990’s had declined back to the levels of the 1950’s.
Bottom Line: Priests are safer to have around kids than most people. They are painted as perverts in the majority because it is good for ratings and serves the leftist agenda.
