In just four weeks, Missouri has carried out an execution, imposed a 72-hour waiting period on women seeking abortions, expanded gun rights and become the poster child for the militarization of police and racial discord. Its public school system is struggling beneath the weight of an ongoing funding crisis, and an entire local police force is under federal investigation.
While the killing of unarmed black teen Michael Brown by a small-city cop and the fiery protests and heavy-handed police response that followed has drawn national attention and scorn, the incident is but a glimpse into the current social and political mess in the Show-Me State.
Lawmakers on Thursday delivered Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon a 16-hour blistering legislative veto session, overriding a record number of his earlier vetoes 47 in all. In doing so, the Republican-controlled Legislature in a broad stroke expanded gun laws that could allow teachers to carry guns into the classroom and became one of the most repressive states in terms of a womans right to abortion.
In 30 days, women seeking an abortion must wait 72 hours to get one. The law is among the most stringent in the nation and puts Missouri among South Dakota and Utah as the only states that make women wait three full days before terminating an unwanted pregnancy.
The literal scorched earth in Ferguson, where Browns killing set off more than a month of protests and clashes, and the figurative burning in the State House, seems indicative of just how deep the states troubles have risen.
Missouri is a perfect example of what a purple state looks like, State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, a Democrat, told msnbc. As we review all of the changes in our laws and statutes were going to have to have some tough and honest conversations.....

I wonder what the citizens of Missouri are thinking about the massive forgiveness of fines and traffic offenses in Ferguson. Oh, those poor defenseless coddled Holder’s people. What have we done? Please forgive us.
There were a lot of votes on emotional wedge issues that have been overdramatized by MSNBC.
If these votes have them upset, imagine if they balanced the budget in Washington, closed down the EPA, OSHA and IRS or in other words really did something to reverse what’s tearing this country down.
The politicians give us these votes around the edges of issues and it’s no coincidence they do it two months before the election.
When a political party comes along that wants to reverse 100 percent reverse Obamacare, balance the budget in this country and not increase the national debt all the time, let me know.
There are two political parties that are machines supported by big elite money that fight each other emotionally demonizing the other party but they don’t take the actions needed to really change things.
Too bad Todd Akin did not win in 2012, whatever that statement was back then.
In other words, the people of Missouri are starting to wake up and see what has been happening to them under the Won.
As we say here in the Ozarks... its a good start.
We still have that right to work thing to get done.
“Purple state?” That could describe Virginia or Colorado both of which Obama carried twice.
Obama didn’t carry Missouri both times around. Its as red as a southern state as you can get.
No wonder the Left is confused.
“unarmedblackteen” must be a new adjective. Not sure what it means.
Its all Republicans fault for being racist, anti-woman and anti-povertist.
Take your pick.
Gee... I wonder what side this writer comes down on!!!
That’s liberal speak for thieving thuggish bully!!!
The Left never shifts. But its always conservatives who mess things up.
MSM speak.
They’re warning about the perils of a GOP Congress.
I am encouraged by the Representatives of the People in the Show Me State.
Keep up the Good Work.
PERIOD
It’d be nice if this was actually true. The legislature may be conservative, but I can’t believe they allowed the press to dictate who they voted for in the last Senate race.
That's debatable; when you look back on the Republican party as a whole [my political life started after Clinton's tenure; so prior to that is less personal experience and may not be valid for the observation], you begin to see that they never had any intent to push for ANY of their party planks — look at how it's never the right time to push against the GCA or NFA or Roe v. Wade, look at how they roll over for such egregious offenses as the NSA's domestic espionage, the TSA's domestic terrorism [under color of law], and how they support the War on Drugs (which seriously damages at least 90% of the Bill of Rights).
And let's not forget NY-23 and the recent debacle int the south: where rather than allow a Tea Party type (read as "non-anointed") the Republicans pushed the Democrat. (And let's not kid ourselves: F and F, IRS scandal, NSA snooping, etc could all have been dealt with painfully with the power the Republican party currently has — that they don't is indicative of their overall approval of these matters.)
Then let's consider how the Democrat and Republican parties threw up a lot of blocks on getting onto state ballots w/o being endorsed/approved by one of them after Ross Perot [IIRC] got nearly a third of the popular vote. Let's not forget that the DNC and RNC both get tax-dollars as funding.
All this leads to the conclusion that the Democrat and Republican parties are, in reality, the same party. Oh sure, they spout different slogans, wear different masks, but at the end of the day they are the elite and you and I are not.
When a political party comes along that wants to reverse 100 percent reverse Obamacare, balance the budget in this country and not increase the national debt all the time, let me know.
I completely understand.
At this point I think the only way to get a handle on the national debt is a Constitutional Amendment… it's one of several issues I think can only be addressed via amendment — here's the four that I think are most needed:
Tax Reform Amendment | Fiscal Responsibility Amendment |
---|---|
Section I No tax, federal or state, shall ever be withheld from the wages of a worker of any citizen of either. Section II No property shall be seized for failure to pay taxes until after conviction in a jury trial; the right of the jury to nullify (and thereby forgive) this debt shall never be questioned or denied. Section III The second amendment is hereby recognized as restricting the power of taxation, both federal and state, therefore no tax (or fine) shall be laid upon munitions or the sale thereof. Section IV The seventh amendment is also hereby recognized, and nothing in this amendment shall restrict the right of a citizen to seek civil redress. Section V No income tax levied by the federal government, the several States, or any subdivision of either shall ever exceed 10%. Section VI No income tax levied by the federal government, the several States, or any subdivision of either shall ever apply varying rates to those in its jurisdiction. Section VII No retroactive or ex post facto tax (or fee) shall ever be valid. Section VIII The congress may not delegate the creation of any tax or fine in any way. Section IX No federal employee, representative, senator, judge, justice or agent shall ever be exempt from any tax, fine, or fee by virtue of their position. Section X Any federal employee, representative, senator, judge, justice or agent applying, attempting to apply, or otherwise causing the application of an ex post facto, retrospective, or retroactive law shall, upon conviction, be evicted from office and all retirement benefits forfeit. |
Section I The power of Congress to regulate the value of the dollar is hereby repealed. Section II The value of the Dollar shall be one fifteen-hundredth avoirdupois ounce of gold of which impurities do not exceed one part per thousand. Section III To guard against Congress using its authority over weights and measures to bypass Section I, the ounce in Section II is approximately 28.3495 grams (SI). Section IV The Secretary of the Treasury shall annually report the gold physically in its possession; this report shall be publicly available. Section V The power of the Congress to assume debt is hereby restricted: the congress shall assume no debt that shall cause the total obligations of the United States to exceed one hundred ten percent of the amount last reported by the Secretary of the Treasury. Section VI Any government agent, officer, judge, justice, employee, representative, or congressman causing gold to be confiscated from a private citizen shall be tried for theft and upon conviction shall: a. be removed from office (and fired, if an employee), b. forfeit all pension and retirement benefits, c. pay all legal costs, and d. restore to the bereaved twice the amount in controversy. Section VII The federal government shall assume no obligation lacking funding, neither shall it lay such obligation on any of the several States, any subdivision thereof, or any place under the jurisdiction of the United States. All unfunded liabilities heretofore assumed by the United States are void. Section VIII The federal government shall make all payments to its employees or the several states in physical gold. Misappropriation, malfeasance and/or misfeasance of funds shall be considered confiscation. |
Commerce Clause Amendment | Senate Reform Amendment |
Section I The federal government shall directly subsidize no product or industry whatsoever, saving the promotion the progress of Science and useful Arts. Section II The federal government shall never prescribe nor proscribe what the several states teach. Neither the federal government nor the several states shall ever deny the right of parents to teach and instruct their children as they see fit. Section III The congress may impose tariffs, excise taxes, and customs duties on anything imported or exported, provided that they are applied uniformly and in no manner restrict, subvert, or circumvent the second amendment. Section IV No law may impose prohibitions of any sort on the commerce between the several states due to the item itself. |
Section I The seventeenth amendment is hereby repealed. Section II The several states may provide by law the means by which their senators may be removed or replaced. |
72 hour wait. Oh the horror. Are you kidding????? So what?
So we gave a baby a 3 day stay of execution. The only thing wrong with that, is that it should have been a permanent reprieve.
Stupid author, doesn't know s##t from shinola.
Ugh, irregardless of whether they get Red/Blue right or not, I can't stand the use of "purple" as a political adjective.
Anyway, MO is now a Republican state, notwithstanding the unfortunate continued tendency of rats to win statewide offices, notably the governorship, which has seen just 1 GOP win in the last 6 elections, with only 1 of those 5 losses being close. At least this rat Governor has to deal with a strongly Republican legislature.
