Earlier this week, the left-leaning Austin American-Statesman editorialized that it’s time that Texas establish driver’s licences for illegal aliens.
In the editorial, the paper calls for Texas to join the 11 states plus the District of Columbia in granting driver’s licenses to those who are in the state illegally. This issue cost California Gov. Gray Davis his job a few years back, in that Democratic state. It’s fair to say that it would be a very controversial move in Texas as the Republican-controlled legislature gets set for its 2015 session, and presumed Gov. Greg Abbott (R) presides over his first session. Presumed Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) would also be presiding over his first session, in the Texas Senate.
The Statesman avoids the politics and pitches a case for road safety.
While not everyone who drives without insurance is living in the U.S. illegally, allowing undocumented immigrants the option to drive legally would make Texas roads that much safer.
A bipartisan bill recognized that in 2013. HD 3206 would have allowed undocumented immigrants to drive legally in Texas and addressed concerns about voting, security and other rights reserved for legal residents.
Under that measure, undocumented immigrants living in Texas would have been issued a special Texas resident drivers permit that looked different from a regular drivers license. The permits wouldnt have been used for any federal purposes, such as going through airport security. It would have allowed undocumented drivers, who are already on Texas roads, to drive legally and get quality auto insurance, a huge problem when you consider that currently more than 2.5 million, or 14.3 percent, of vehicles in Texas lack coverage. In Travis County, 120,125 vehicles (more than 13 percent) are not insured.

If they want to come out of the shadows...
Abbott is running such a “non-campaign” thus far that any other Democrat except for Wendy would easily beat him.
Tell us about Harless; I am unaware of her existence. Where is she from? I know I can look it up, but I thought you could explain her in a line or two.
Given their DISTRICT ATTORNEY, I think Austin should get their own act together on drunk driving and how to deal with it, before preaching to the rest of the country.
This article doesn’t name names but I will.
My TX rep Byron Cook just spoke to the republican executive committee and was blatant about giving illegals (tho he didn’t call them that) DRIVERS PERMITS. not DL’s permits.
I asked why does he want to make it easier for them to stay. He said they are already here we need to have them with insurance to drive (and know who they are with the Permits). He also stated it was not to vote or get onto planes.
A permit will turn into a TDL later I’m sure.
Then he said that he had done a survey and overwhelmingly the people wanted them to have permits to drive (so they can have insurance I guess).
Several people were getting into this with him and he quickly changed the subject to teen suicide & education at the meeting.
I have an email in to him to find out the exact question on the survey, how many people answered back and how many said yes and no. I have not heard from him to date.
Oh BTW, Byron Cook is District 8
Some bus station or bath house?
Austin is the blue blight in the middle of the Lone Star State.
Abbott was never getting this household’s vote. Can’t say much good about Davis, either. Nothing good is coming out of TX these days. Abbott’s stuuuuupid campaign commercial is him in his wheelchair rolling around a parking garage and saying, “Just one more, just one more.” Uh, what one more? One more illegal alien? One more tax increase? One more kiss a lib’s behind? One more selling out our once great state?
I live in Houston and she represents my part of the district. Nothing is getting done over here. When I have contacted her she made it sound like I was inconveniencing her. I also understand she was one of the ones here in TX who went against Gov. Perry. I simply do not trust her.

This Abbott campaign is downright “embarrassing”, isn’t it? He would lose to a power candidate but must be trying to coast to victory. I don’t see him getting more than 54 or 55 percent.
