The rise of Scotland the terrible
www.thecommentator.com ^ | Tom Gallagher

It only hit home last Monday that I was living in a transformed country. It was in Musselburgh, a neat, mainly working-class town at the mouth of the river Esk, unjustly overlooked by tourists who cram into nearby Edinburgh.

I was in the crowd at a rally being addressed by Jim Murphy MP, one of the few stars on the pro-Union side. He was assailed by a local SNP councillor and abuse was hurled from passing cars. It was a mild example of the ‘systematic manipulation of hatreds’ which is how the American Henry Adams once described elections, except that the referendum campaign on Scottish independence has been going on for nearly 1,000 days since the start of 2012.

One eloquent young shop-worker confronted Murphy about ‘foodbanks and the bedroom tax’. The verbally adroit MP was unfazed. Perhaps if the heckler had mentioned Labour’s inglorious role in the assault on young girls in its Rotherham stronghold, he might have been on the defensive.

But the Scottish National Party (SNP) and its far-left allies assume that the workings of an unwieldy state can only bring good outcomes.

Suddenly this pro-independence ‘yes’ supporter shouted out: Mr Murphy, just look at this town, it’s in a terrible state’. I looked and saw tidy streets, containing some attractive small shops; a theatre, a race course and impressive civic buildings were nearby.

Musselburgh gleamed in the sunshine but for this bright alienated young man it might as well have been Calcutta or Soweto. He is one of many Scots whipped up by non-stop agitation on social media and in the streets by a formidable Yes campaign.

The referendum tumult has been far uglier across in post-industrial Glasgow and its environs.

ancestrally, half my blood is Scottish, but I am not familiar with the politics of modern Scotland. I do know separation from England has been popular throughout history. Just what kind of government do modern Scots want. From some of which I have read, the leaders sound very liberal. Would they be a socialist government?

This potentially disastrous situation is the result of 20+ years of wretched leadership in the U.K. The Left has caused the country to unravel, and now the people are grasping at straws for a solution. They know something is wrong, they want it fixed, but the political system isn’t really offering them anything (sounds familiar!). A good number of Scots apparently want “freedom”. From what, and to do what? All of the nationalist rhetoric seems to point toward mashing the accelerator on what has sent the U.K. on the road to its present situation.

I was wondering that myself, as I understand that Scotland is heavily socialist, enough to distinguish itself from England as such.

"Our shackles are better than yours!" ?!?

Someone please correct me if I am wrong about this, I'd like to know for sure, but...

Search references seems to imply Scotland has already fallen to socialist failure...

It amazes me how Europe can so blindly embrace Hitler's and Lenin's policies with such a death grip, but not much more than the democrats amaze me.

It’s a ruse, to make the “population” think it has thrown off some big oppressor, but just makes room for a bigger oppressor, same as in Russia. They thought throwing off the Czar was freedom and look what they got from the stinking Communists.

Had the Scots moved past the clan loyalty to individual freedom before the English Union?

People still accustomed to obeying the clan leader don’t quite get representative republican government and freedom.

Look at the Middle East.It seems there are steps to responsible freedom that can’t be skipped.

There is no lack of places with much deeper internal tensions where the temptation to secede and walk out on national debt, may be irresistible.

want more socialism as they think that the Govt in the UK is too far too to the right.

If they think breaking away is good just wait until 5 years has gone by and their economy is dire

The ironic thing was that the last Czar wanted to westernize Russia and become a symbolic head of Russia.

Thanks for the info, so many times in the US I have seen that the law is nothing like the label, I fear that in Scotland.

It's happened, to an extent, here in the US. Since 2000 we've heard how bad Bush and his economy and his war was. We threw it off in 2008 for a Hugo Chavez wannabe. It's always that way, when times get really bad the people look for some all powerful savior, only to be fooled into bringing in something far worse. More freedom is never the end result.

And clearly he was moving in that direction. In 1913
Russian had several world class universities and was beginning to industrialize. What destroyed the Czar were two wars: The Russo-Japanese War in 1905 and of course WWI.

I think when people are bombarded with lies about how bad it is from the dims, libtards, and LSM (but I repeat myself)they think hope and change, never considering it could be worse.

While I think the drive for independence is based a lot on emotional feelings, obviously the Scots are smart enough to establish their own workable country. To be sure, they're going to take their lumps at the beginning...especially if they insist on being a more socialist country than even the not exactly Adam Smithian present UK.

They'll quickly discover that their "terrible" union with the English wasn't quite so terrible. But if the Irish can do it, I'm sure the Scots can. If they learn that Das Kapital is better for wiping their backsides than as any cogent economic plan.

Why not devalue the currency like everyone else?

They will soon enough if given the chance.
