Sotomayor: Americans Should be Alarmed by Spread of Drones
WSJ ^ | 9/12/2014 | Jacob Gershman

Posted on 09/12/2014 12:30:24 PM PDT by BuckeyeTexan

Americans should be more concerned about their privacy being invaded by the spread of drones, Justice Sonia Sotomayor told an Oklahoma City audience on Thursday.

Speaking before a group of faculty members and students at Oklahoma City University’s law school on Sept. 11, Justice Sotomayor said “frightening” changes in surveillance technology should encourage citizens to take a more active role in the privacy debate. She said she’s particularly troubled by the potential for commercial and government drones to compromise personal privacy.

Said Justice Sotomayor:

There are drones flying over the air randomly that are recording everything that’s happening on what we consider our private property. That type of technology has to stimulate us to think about what is it that we cherish in privacy and how far we want to protect it and from whom. Because people think that it should be protected just against government intrusion, but I don’t like the fact that someone I don’t know…can pick up, if they’re a private citizen, one of these drones and fly it over my property.

Technological advances make it possible for devices to “listen to your conversations from miles away and through your walls,” Justice Sotomayor said. “We are in that brave new world, and we are capable of being in that Orwellian world, too.”

Drones are not commercial or private aircraft, they are trespassers unless invited and subject to being shot down.

What are the chances of a drone filled with explosives crashing into your house, my house, or the white house? I think that day has come. Or am I a little nuts to think that way.

Just because something is possible doesn’t mean we must allow it no matter how “cool”.

Too many agencies already peer at your property from above.

If I’m on the jury the person who shoots down a drone is walking free.

So you wouldn’t follow your oath. That speaks volumes about you personally, as well as your integrity..... or lack thereof.

Jury nullification.

The principle that the law is on trial and jurors are more than automatons of the state. It is part of America.Too bad it isn’t exercised more often.

I expect to lose no sleep over your opinion of my integrity.

She’s got some good points.

Technology is increasingly eroding our freedoms, and not just from its use by government, but also by business.

Everyone is increasingly in a race against the machine.

Work your brains out, or technology will offshore your job or replace you with a computer.

American workers are becoming slaves.

I am sorry SAJ, I must report you to the moderator for your patriarchal, gender-normative, racist remarks.

If a an Obese,Lesbo-Latina-Commie-Legal-Slut cannot speak her mind from the lofty heights of her Affirmative Action Anus Perch, it behooves us all to heartily agree. I m sure that her fellow gourmand de tapié, The Lesbo-Commie Kagan (ovitch) will back me up on this. (You know the gal, brother was head of the CPUSA? Niece of Stalin's right-hand mass murderer, Kaganovitch?)

Of course, the problem with Sotomayor isn't Latin-ness, it's the lack of wisdom (coupled with the amazing hubris in labeling herself as wise).

We could use more wise people on the Court, including Latinos/Latinas. But according to Democrat senators, no votes to confirm such people are allowed unless they are also Democrats.

I guess I’m just not too concerned given that this very post is being monitored and we all know it. The government has totally obviated the notion of privacy and I suppose I find it somewhat reassuring that private individuals should have the capability to return the favor to the government. If that means someone could have a video equipped RC helicopter over my property then so be it. As long as it doesn’t bother the chickens or the bison it’s no big deal to me.

Report away, mate. The moment that I am not patriarchal and sexually normal (and, ftm, normative), you may safely assume that I have either died or booked passage to Mars.

And don't get me started on Kaganovitch. The wide Latina is an object of hilarity who AA'd her way to a position for which she is disreputable and undercredentialed (IMNNHO), but Dykaganovitch is an outright treasonist.

FReegards!

You seem to be implying that you’re not concerned about drones because you don’t have anything to hide or because you don’t have the ability to hide anything from current technology anyway.

What about NSA surveillance? Does that concern you? You probably don’t have anything to hide in your phone calls/emails anyway and you likely don’t have the tools to hide everything from the NSA. So why be concerned?

Am I misunderstanding your position?
