Hollywood Code Red: 2014 Already a Write Off, 19% of Jobs Cut

When you combine Variety's story about a 19% drop in entertainment industry jobs, and The Hollywood Reporter's story about the 2014 box office already being written off as a "disaster," things look pretty glum in the business of show. And probably for good reason.

No one expected Summer 2014 to tank. No one. Everyone's saying "wait till next year," but this year there was a Spider-Man, some X-Men, a bunch of Apes, more Transformers, ..., this past Labor Day weekend was the worst since the post- 9/11 Labor Day weekend.

No one knows why. No one can explain it. And that has everyone worried.

Speaking for myself only, movies lately don't interest me because they appear to simply be over the top CGI crap. Seeing 2000 hobbits, zombies, aliens in hand to hand combat doesn't appeal to me. CGI explosions, people jumping 40 feet in a single bound, blah, blah, doesn't appeal to me.

Take the movie "Aliens" from 1986 or so. No CGI, it is models, real stunts, real explosions. It still holds up 30 years later. It is an exciting story, within the bounds of physical realism. I wouldn't call Aliens in my top 50 movies, but I like that kind of movie. But they are not made like that anymore. Maybe all the stories have been told.

Took my grandson to see a movie in April for his birthday. Two twilight tickets, one box of popcorn and one drink to share - $40. And what did he have when it was over? An empty popcorn box and a ticket stub for a marginal movie.

Told him we’d stay home next time, rent a movie that we would both enjoy without having to sit through all the commercials and have all the popcorn and soda he wanted plus invite friends over to join us - all for about $10.

I’ll be damned if I allow a single dime of mine go to those lefty Hollywood scumbags. They spit on every single thing I respect and value. And every dollar they earn gets turned back around to finance more liberal propaganda and underwrite more socialist Obama/Hillary political campaigns. It’s like literally handing over cash to those who desire to enslave and destroy me.

I got that from context but the idea that Allen’s films are some sort of staple of Hollywood film making is silly.

Of the movies mentioned, I saw the Xmen II flick.

It wasn't a great flick, but it was amusing. Paid $2 to go see it (me and Mrs WBill: "For a change tonite, let's go see a movie! What's playing?") at the dollar theater. We got our money's worth. Two bucks for an evening's entertainment of medium quality is a fair deal.

If I had paid $22, though, (or more!) I think I'd have a different opinion.

Never mind the rest of the movies listed. To me, they all looked "Bad" and "Worse".

Their products stink, the president they financed, stinks, Their harebrained causes like global warming, stink.

I cannot enjoy a movie anymore because as soon as I see the actor who is supposed to be the hero, I am reminded what a stupid asshole he is in real life. The fantasy is ruined.

Who can explain it, who can tell you why.

Only half the stories have been told.

The other half aren’t allowed in Hollywood.

Any conservative that financially supports Hollywood is a hypocrite.

Well, let's see ... I can buy groceries or movie tickets ... hmmm...which do I pick?

I have no problem skipping movies (aka "shadows on the wall") in order to survive in this liberal "utopia".

“No one knows why. No one can explain it. And that has everyone worried.”

Failed economy, self-important actors supporting policies which continue to harm the economy.

Greatest American Hero is being made into a movie? Sigh.

I liked that series, for about one season. It was pretty much a one-joke show, and it wore out fast.

And, I was what, 10? 12? when it was on. My tastes have changed, some. :-)

Yeah...they have no storytelling creativity. Been that way for a long, long time.

Only “sequels” or poorly done remakes of classics will do

All flash and glitter, no substance

"No one knows why. No one can explain it."

We rarely if ever go see a movie at the theater. We turned off satellite TV a few years ago. They kept pestering me crying for me to come back. Every time they called I told them I didn't want to see all the gay influence that had come into every show they had on. They finally gave up.

Now the tv is hooked to a computer for use as a big screen reader for FR. That's pretty much all we watch nowadays.
