I was just reading about the carrier...
during RIMPAC war games in ‘98 a 60’s era submarine from Australia was able to come within 300 meters and launch green flares.... “sinking” the Carl Vinson.
That is messed up.

She may have been 60's era, but she was an Oberon class (HMAS Onslow to be precise) - among the quietest submarines ever built - carrying out the precise mission she was designed for.
