Russia has warned that US air strikes against militants in Syria would be a "gross violation" of international law.

A Russian foreign ministry spokesman said any such action, without the backing of the UN, would be "an act of aggression".

It comes as US Secretary of State John Kerry meets Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia to try to build a coalition against Islamic State (IS) militants.

President Obama has threatened action against IS in Syria as well as Iraq.

IS controls large parts of Syria and Iraq after a rapid military advance.

In a speech outlining his strategy, Mr Obama said any group that threatened America would "find no safe haven".

He also announced that 475 US military personnel would be sent to Iraq but said they would not have a combat role

It is kind of interesting that the left hasn’t been screeching for Obama to go to the UN like they did with Bush.

Weird - ISIS is battling Assad. Russia supports Assad. US wants to bomb ISIS. Russia does not want the US to assist Assad.

Clearly Russia opposes the USA more than it does Islamic militants.

The greatest mastermind of the 21th Century can’t grasp that his nation’s decades old ally is under attack, and the U. S. would be bombing those who are trying to topple that government.

I’m glad this guy is finally placing the final nails in his own political coffin. Some folks needed some help desperately. This should do it.

Maybe. I think this is more about point America in the eye than helping Islamists. I stink of Barrys feckless weak-kneed ‘leadership’ is just too much for the bear to ignore. Even though liberals believe the Cold War is done Rusia has never taken that attitude. Theyre still in the fight.

I guess his incursions into Georgia and Ukraine, as well as his threats to nuke Ukraine and Poland, are in full compliance with “international law”?

We should ask the Soviets what their legal justification is for their invasion of Ukraine?

Hmmm, I wonder what prompted the Russians to butt in?
Unless maybe they were players in this all along. Maybe they have been stirring the pot all along so that they could keep us distracted?

If Obama does actually order airstrikes in Syria, he's probably going to go after Assad at the same time as he goes after IS. In fact, he'll likely exert more effort ousting Assad than dealing with IS. He can get away with it... with the MSM's help and the excuse of "fog of war".

I'm sure Putin understands this.
