Obie’s trying to send some other country’s kids into combat to protect his own political position. I hope the Aussies tell him they’d be happy to contribute boots on the ground after he does.

But we don’t even speak Australian, or Austrian for that matter.

Special Air Service...what do they do? I'm slightly familiar with our “Air Cav”...choppers inserting troops into the fight IIRC.Is the SAS anything like that?

We don't do that to our allies - just because they have temporarily elected a leader who isn't very good.

Our relationship with the US transcends that.

But I expect our government to make sure there's a clear mission with clear expectations that is in our interest before we participate.

We don't sign blank cheques either. There needs to be a clear purpose and aim that we believe will be followed through by all concerned.

I’d love to see the Israelis volunteer for a few bombing runs...wouldn’t that blow their minds?

Special Air Service...what do they do?

Basically elite special forces soldiers - among the best in the world. The term 'Special Air Service' was adopted during the Second World War partly to conceal what they really did - it made them look like they had something to do with planes when they didn't - and the reputation they forged meant the name became one to be proud of, and so it is retained.

Until the rules of engagement are loosened to a level as ruthless as those they are fighting, seal our f’ing borders and let the muzzies continue to kill each other.

It seems as though Obama makes a lot of use of our spec ops guys and there always seems to be some set-up lurking around the corner.

"Special Air Service...what do they do?"

Pretty much anything that needs to be done. Remember the Iranian Embassy siege in London back in 1980?

The one which interests me is the Special Operation Engineer Regiment. I wonder what they do?

My Father was in the Combat Engineers in WWII. I recently saw a cartoon in which they said they built a bridge so fast that the Jerries used it to retreat.

That was the British SAS not the SASR.

So much cross training, there’s not much difference. And even more so back then.

Obviously the Brits are the originals - but the Australian and New Zealand SAS share their traditions. Otherwise they wouldn’t be allowed to keep the badge and motto :) . You don’t mess with the SAS.

Obviously...but also built on the same model and mission...down to the same motto. I was just citing perhaps one of the highest profile (British) missions that would answer the fellow FReeper’s question.

Well, in essence, all military operations can need engineering support - and the environment in which special ops forces operate sometimes require engineers who can operate in that environment themselves - they basically need to be special ops troops. That's what the SOER does. They are also specially trained to respond to chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear attacks whether domestic terrorism, or overseas as part of combat operations.

Back in 1992 I watched an Aussie Captain drink a British Army Company under the table. He was the last man standing and ready for more.

The Brits can put away some serious booze, so I was amazed.

And this guy wasn’t even SAS.
