WICHITA Police are still looking for the men who threatened a youth football league coach with a gun and then began beating him before the coach’s wife pulled out a gun and fired it in the air to scare the attackers away.
The incident occurred at about 7:45 p.m. Monday at Linwood Park in south Wichita, Lt. James Espinoza said.
A man watching the practice at the park at 1901 S. Kansas confronted the coach about his son’s lack of playing time, lifting his shirt to display a handgun tucked into the waist of his pants. Moments later, five or six other men began beating up the 37-year-old coach, Espinoza said.
One of the men had a set of brass knuckles he used to beat the coach. Seeing the attack, the coach’s wife pulled out a gun and fired it into the air.
The coach broke free of his attackers and went to his car for a second gun, which he pointed at various people in the crowd, Espinoza said.
The attackers had all fled the park by the time officers arrived, Espinoza said. The guns used by the coach and his wife were confiscated, but no arrests have yet been made.
“It’s upsetting to even hear a story like this,” said Espinoza, who is a youth league football coach himself. “It just sets a terrible example of coaching and parenting.”
The police report did not document the ages of the players practicing or the team to which they belong, Espinoza said. Youth league teams involve players from the second to the eighth grades.
“From time to time, you’ll have a disturbance with coaches or parents, but nothing of this magnitude,” Espinoza said.
Anyone who shot video of the disturbance is encouraged to contact investigators at 316-268-4646, he said.
Youth league rules stipulate that each player on the team play at least four plays a game, he said.
Any young children who were at the practice and saw the fight and resulting gunfire, “they’ll probably never forget that,” Espinoza said. “It should be no part of the sport.”

This whole story sounds wild. Lucky for the coach, both he and the Missus were packing. They know the Coach’s age, but not the name? It should be easy to identify most the assailants, who is the team member with the crazy Dad?
Crimes were committed. It is entirely inappropriate for the cops to decide on the spot what those crimes were and who committed them. That’s why we have due process.
Seems like the coach would know where to send the police since it was the father of one of his players who started the fight and showed the gun first.
I hope Mr. & Mrs. Coach have backups.

Had a situation like that several years ago. Thankfully I wasn’t been up. Several parents cornered me about why their little Gretzky’s weren’t getting equal playing time. I calmly explained ice time was earned and not an entitlement. They told me that when they pay 7k a year their kids are entitled. I disagreed and told them to read the contract each parent and player signed.
Five parents pulled their kids from the program. I went from 18 skaters to 13. In the end it was addition by subtraction as we won league championship.
This must be the “inherent risk of football” Morley Safer kept referring to in last Sunday’s Sixty Minutes...

I’d like to know more about the team, the coach and the attackers. Off hand, and without information, I guess that it was racially motivated.

If someone is beating up on me, I want Mrs. Tick to SHOOT THE BASTARD! Not shoot into the air.
(Of course, if Mrs. Tick happens to be the one that is beating up on me, I’ll have to go to plan B. Whatever that is.)
That was probably tuition, and not team related.
It’s a given that daily carry weapons should be reliable but inexpensive units or worn out old work horses, while the pristine engraved safe-queens stay where they belong, in the safe.
