A new policy put in place by Cal State University could cost InterVarsity and other Christian groups up to $460,000 to meet on campus because they cannot change their leadership requirements to include any student.
"No campus shall recognize any fraternity, sorority, living group, honor society, or other student organization unless its membership and leadership are open to all currently enrolled students at that campus," the policy states.
The rule requires leadership positions to be open to any student, regardless of whether they hold the same beliefs as the Club. The policy went into effect in 2012 but up until this year religious clubs had been granted an exemption.
Being a recognized student group had allowed InterVarsity to reserve rooms for club meetings and events at no cost. Still, the Christian group refuses to bend their belief requirements to accommodate the new rule.
"We estimate that it will cost each of the 23 InterVarsity chapters serving Cal State campuses up to $20,000 a year to rent rooms, generate awareness, and meet new students if we are unrecognized in the coming year," Greg Jao, who is leading InterVarsity's response to the new policy, said in a video message.
Cal State is the nation's largest university system with nearly 450,000 students on 23 campuses.
"It's particularly important that InterVarsity student leaders embrace scripture's teaching about who God is, what Jesus has accomplished on the cross, and how the Holy Spirit transforms us," Jao said.
InterVarsity has asked for support from outside donors and for prayer as they embark on new ways to accomplish the purpose and vision of their group.
"We may be unrecognized in the coming year, but we will not be off campus. InterVarsity is committed to grow our current ministries and plant new ministries in the Cal State system," Jao said.
This university runs on public money.

It’s always easiest to attack Christians. The enemies know they won’t get a hostile visit from CAIR or its toadies in the DOJ.
Call it “Whites For Black Christians” - claim racism if they deny them.
This is the sort of case the ACLU might take. They’d take it in a heartbeat if the discrimination ran the other way.
As I see it, they have banned real Christianity from their campus.
The kind of ‘christianity’ that has no guidelines is apparently ok. But that is a very small segment of the whole. Real Christianity has guidelines. And since the kind with guidelines has been banned, then this is gross discrimination by a public institution against Christianity.
Is La Raza exempt?

I forget. Who is in charge of Caliphornia’s university system? Oh. Right. Obola crony, Janet al-Napolitano.
The LGB’s would call the police, and the administration would support them.
But, they will argue “we allow them to join and they just don’t get voted into leadership.’ That’s probably true. A fundamentalist Baptist can join, but probably will never be elected.
However, what is being said is that a Christian club can have no leadership guidelines. That, effectively, makes them a non-Christian club. So, whether they’d ever get voted in or not isn’t the issue.
Somebody find out about islamics on campus—are there foot washing tubs like at michigan?
Someone can't just waltz in and declare themselves the leader of a Christian group, right?
The other members of the studet group have to vote to select them, right?
This idea of leadership being "open" to others doesn't guarantee that others will be selected, if the membership is smart, right?

It’s typical for Christian groups to REQUIRE adherance to moral tenants as a qualification for leadership. It’s a broad and useful requirement for spiritual maturity.

The problem is that they’re being forced to have no principles and no guidelines.
And, yes, someone can stack membership and elect anyone.
The Catholic Student Union could be led by a female bestiality queen.
However, not allowing guidelines is saying that real Christianity is not welcome. Real Christianity has guidelines.
