The GOP’s Democrat on the border
Politico ^ | 8 Sep 2014 | SEUNG MIN KIM

For many Democrats in Congress, Henry Cuellar is persona non grata.

The House Democrat from the border city of Laredo, Texas, sounds more like a Republican in his relentless criticism of President Barack Obama’s handling of the border crisis. He joined forces with a top Senate Republican on legislation that would make it easier to deport child migrants. And he was the lone Democrat to back the House GOP’s $694 million emergency border funding bill.

The maneuvering infuriated Democrats, who privately fumed that Cuellar gave bipartisan veneer to a deportation plan the party overwhelmingly abhors. The frustration is especially deep among members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, who suddenly had to fend off one of their own — in addition to hard-line Republicans.

Rep. Rubén Hinojosa not only denounced Cuellar’s deportation measure — but suggested he’s not really part of the Hispanic Caucus.

“Henry Cuellar does not represent the Congressional Hispanic Caucus,” Hinojosa, who leads the CHC, said when pressed on Cuellar’s proposal. “He’s a Blue Dog, he comes to the meetings once in a long time … But make it clear. Cuellar does not speak for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.”

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) slammed the proposal as a “deportation-only agenda dressed up in sheep’s clothing.”

In a recent interview with POLITICO in his congressional office, Cuellar shrugged off the criticism from his fellow Democrats — defending his actions to ease the humanitarian crisis whose “epicenter,” he noted, was right in his own backyard in the Rio Grande Valley.

“So am I going to follow political parties here? No, I’m not,” Cuellar said. “But am I going to follow what I think is right and be open to compromise? Yes, I am. Will I withstand the criticism? I have in the past on other issues. I don’t mind.”

Cuellar is used to being a thorn in the side for Democrats. He backed then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush’s presidential bid in 2000 and has bucked the party on issues ranging from free trade to the latest border crisis...................I thought this type of Democrat was extinct.

I thought he was going to be Hillary's running mate for 2016.

Come on Henry. Its time to take the plunge and switch parties. The Dems aren’t going to change.

HA! If that's the case, the people of that district should vote for a full-time Republican instead of a part-time one.

It is not to the advantage of Mexican-Americans to have a huge influx of Central Americans.

UGH!

I just heard that sh*tbag Horhay Ramos on TV, stating that it is ‘dangerous to mix politics and religion’. As expected, he then revealed he had abandoned the Faith. What a piece of crap journo. He needs to be deported back to whatever hellhole he came from. Sick and tired of seeing this Unitard praised from all sides because he’s “tough on Obama”. Yeah, he’s tough because he wants Obama to be MORE socialist and MORE unconstitutional. Also, of course “WHITE PRIVILEGE!!!”

F U Horhay!

As for Cuellar, now he knows what happens if you stray from the RamosOpenBorder/DiseasedIllegal plantation.

If he did he would be vilified as a RINO.

He is actually an excellent example what a Moderate Republican should look like. Having him in the Republican party would be helpful in attracting Hispanics but would also change the committee make up in congress a bit. It would also blunt the concerted effort being made by demonrats to turn Texas Blue
