LBJ’s 1964 attack ad ‘Daisy’ leaves a legacy for modern campaigns
Washington Post ^ | September 5 | Drew Babb

Fifty years ago, on Sept. 7, 1964, a political ad called “Daisy” aired on behalf of President Lyndon Johnson. The commercial opened with a little girl in a meadow, then a horrific nuclear blast filled the screen. We’ve been feeling the fallout ever since.

It was only a minute long. The paid ad ran on national television only once, and only on one network, NBC. But that’s all it took.

There was a joke going around a year or so later:

“They told me if I voted for Goldwater, we’d get in a war. They were right — I voted for him and we’re in one.”

It ran one time on one network as an advertisement. Every time after that was the news media carrying Johnson's water for him and running it free as "news".

From the article:

But the networks (only three of ’em, remember?) duly registered the GOP ire and — to show people what all the fuss was about — ran “Daisy” ad nauseam. Result: The one-time- only spot was shown over and over. And under the aegis of newscasts, it undoubtedly picked up credibility along the way.

I actually saw that ad live on TV. I was 6 years old and still remember it clearly.

Sure a shame that Goldwater did not win that election. Our history during that time would have been more pleasant and more productive. Ironically, the daisy commercial was more descriptive of what would happen with Johnson at the helm rather than Goldwater.

Johnson gave us a war, and the Great Society.......a massive, multi-generational welfare splurge that has only served to hurt - in the long run - those it claimed it would help. And more.

Goldwater would have been a fantastic president.

I was nine, I don’t remember that ad but I do remember this LBJ ad that ran in 64. It’s the girl on a bench eating an ice cream cone.

I saw the ad too. It was maybe run as an ad per se once, but it was replayed by the news media during programming as a lead-in to their story about it. A now familiar tactic of the MSM to give free left wing advertising by making a "story" out of it.

They manage to mention his name somewhere near the bottom, like a line in the phone book.

“The ad was immediately pulled, but the point was made, appearing on the nightly news and on conversation programs in its entirety.”

That ad is my first recollection of the compliant media killing a presidential campaign by running that attack ad over and over.

Indeed! 58,000 Americans, plus their children and grandchildren would be alive, and virtually no one in America would know what a “Vietnam” was, but for LBJ and Moyers’ filthy lies! Amazing that LBJ got a complete pass from the left for his war-related lying, and the war was hung around the neck of Richard Nixon, while LBJ is considered the hero of civil rights and Medicare. Leftism really IS a mental disorder!

It is possible that they only paid to have it run once and then the networks, because of the controversy, ran it over and over again for free under the aegis of news. If you read the article, you will discover that the article says that that was precisely what happened. You may owe the WP an apology.

LBJ may have been an S.O.B., but he was a clever and ruthless S.O.B.

I don’t doubt that it occurred as you spoke. But I saw it many times as a dim add in Norfolk Va. But I was still kinda young then.
