Sitting at her street vending booth with products arrayed neatly on a sequined purple tablecloth, Jackie Lloyd reflects nostalgically on the days when she had a steady salary and regular hours..
That was four years ago, before the 39-year-old was laid off from her job as an elementary school cafeteria worker and mounting bills forced her to venture into self-employment.
Now the Pico-Union resident hops from location to location, selling body oils, shea butter, soap and incense. She moves when nearby businesses complain or she feels unsafe.
Some days, her sales bring in $150. Others, they don't break $20....

Now why would they complain, oh yeah because they are paying for a business license, rent, utilities and taxes and your probably set up in their parking spaces.
The fact that the unemployment statistics are cooked is becoming impossible to avoid.
Even some newspapers have seen the truth.
The only reason it isn’t the biggest scandal in the country is the TV news avoids the subject.
Yeah, why can’t I set-up my hot dog cart in front of Burger King, McDonalds or KFC?
There was a thread yesterday which praised the current economy for producing a vast number of “freelancers”. The modern economy needs a lot of “freelancers”, and Obama’s economic policy has successfully created an environment that allows many, many people to be “freelancers”.

It doesn’t say in the article who she voted for, but chances are, it was for Obama. I admire the people featured in this story, they are doing the best they can do, and legally making money. The first lady, Ms. Lloyd says she ‘couldn’t even get a job at safeway because she’s ‘overqualified’. That may be true, it may also be that due to her being very overweight, and not knowing how to dress herself to look more professional in public, the employer politely gave her the cold shoulder. As for the second couple, I could use a bacon-wrapped hot dog right about now.

That doesn’t sound like a good thing does it? The economy that produces these “freelancers” is a bad one.
You know those Hispanics hanging out in front of Home Depot for day labor?
Those are what you call Freelancers.

Some of the richest people in this country could also be classified that way. Like Yakov Schmirinoff used to say, right?
That is the issue, but I tell Ya what, going mobile aint cheap.
Licensing is outrageous, largely because the brick and mortar guys complain to city hall.
What are people to do?
You can not just horn in on another mans action without blow back, but many are finding symbiotic relationships.
Taxes and regulation are a Huge problem.
Yet, the Times will have 2-3 articles this week about how booming the economy is ...
I know a lot of the street vendor business is Hiispanic ... and all street business sin Pico-Union is Hispanic.
They thumb their nose at authorities.
These must be all of the new “private sector” jobs 0bama keeps bragging about. I have heard stories of people selling apples and other produce on the street corners during the depression.
I call the P.D. and complain but they blow me off saying the people are just trying to make a living. They get upset when I ask for their name and badge number and want to know why, I tell them I want to quote the city authority correctly when I tell the licensing bureau why my wife won't have to pay for a business license.
All of Pico Union is Hispanic.
And virtually ALL street vendors in LA are Hispanic. They are leeches.
Jeez you act like someone pooped on the palletas.
