A revitalized NATO is already facing its first test of Russian aggression, on the same day it wrapped up its critical summit in Wales.
Russian agents have crossed the border into Estonia, a NATO country, and detained a police officer, according to the Estonian government.
"We should see it... as a demonstration on behalf of Russia that provocations have started," Estonia's ambassador to Canada told Evan Solomon on CBC Radio's The House.
According to Gita Kalmet, Russian agents wearing no insignia crossed the border at Luhamaa, in southeastern Estonia, jammed communications equipment and threw smoke grenades before abducting the agent at gunpoint.
"It's a very demonstrative and brutal act," the ambassador said. But she was careful and remained cautious about comparing the incident to the situation in Ukraine. She also reiterated Estonia's confidence that they will be protected under the NATO alliance.
"We don't think that the same scenario can be re-enacted in Estonia... because we take the fact that we are NATO members really very seriously," she said.

I worked with an Estonian guy who was born in a DP camp in Germany. His father was Waffen SS, but he claimed he was just an Estonian patriot. He was afraid the Russians were going to reinvade Estonia, sooner or later. He hated Russians with a passion. When a Russian General inspected the facility were he worked as part of SALT-III, he hid. He would not allow the use of his name in his company email address. He would never use his own name on the internet, and we had to use a pseudonym when referring to him in emails. You couldn’t refer to “John Smith”, it had to be “Tiberius”. Everyone used his pseudonym when referring to him, except to his face.
Even if you’re paranoid, sometimes they are out to get you.
Anyone opposed is supposed to be a NAZI or worse, a Ukrainian. Putin, the champion of Christianity, will wage a series of unprovoked war to stomp on his neighbors all for his vainglory and his cronies wealth. Yes, he's STRONG, and I know some admire that. He's strong like Machiavelli advised a prince to be. He's strong like Nietzsche wanted the new elite to be in his book BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL. But when all is said and done he's just former KGB thug, a secret policeman like his dad, a communist party approved thug. He may be president for life, and some may admire that as strength, like other autocrats in the Third World. I prefer the strength of law and self-control.

It’s not unusual that communism rose first and flourished in Russia. Communism and all its prettily named cousins - liberalism, socialism, progressivism - are just extensions of feudalism. How were Saddam or Qaddafy any different than any Russian Czar?

There is a huge difference between acknowledging Russian aggression and pursuing the course of WWI. Your exaggeration is fatuous. I hope you meant it to be.
After all, who would want a country the size of New Hampshire and Vermont filled with about 867,000 Estonians and 314,000 ethnic Russians that spends 2% of it's anemic GDP on their military and is pinned helplessly between you and the sea on your western border?

I do not exaggerate, nor was my comment fatuous. There is a huge difference between acknowledging Russian aggression and pursuing the course of WWI, you are completely correct here. Where you err is in expecting NATO to get it right.
How well have European diplomats ever done in preventing stupid wars? More recently, how well have American diplomats done?
You could have grabbed any random FReeper at any point in the last six years and they’d have known that Russia was trouble and that its former colonies were at risk. How is it the pros missed it?

Like most Americans we think of colonies being carved out of primitive lands, we don’t think of overrunning Poland and East Germany, as creating Russian colonies, we think of them as conquering and enslaving a nation.
That’s funny. Colonies are overrun and conquered lands, usually the conquerors are either numerically or technologically advanced or both.
Yep. Russia will definitely try to play the victim as they invade little Estonia. Maybe they will claim to be rescuing the Russian minority in the tiny country from the mean old Estonians.
