The whale carcass shown on the bottom supporting the whole ecosystem of scavengers was, IIRC, one which had died in shallow water and was towed to deep water then sunk. That was why the film crew knew exactly here to look.

Just watched Star Trek 2-4 a few weeks ago on Netflix. Way better than the 2 new movies, IMHO. Not that the Abrams movies are bad, I just prefer the originals.
i grew up with the originals and enjoy the series if its on. The movies were okay for their time, I think the 2 Abrahms has done are really good.
