Worcester (MA) school bus video shows 'terrifying' confrontation between parents, driver

It's unclear what happened before the video started, but what happened afterward one parent could only describe as "terrifying."

Video shot by a parent of a Quinsigamond Elementary School student Wednesday afternoon of what should have been a routine school bus stop showed young children crying and screaming, seemingly unable to leave the school bus they were riding in as parents shouted at the driver to let them off.

In the video, shot near the corner of Perry Ave. and Harlem Street by parent Jessica Jimenez, parents curse and shout at the driver asking why she won't let the kids off while children complain that they're unable to leave. The bus door is seen shut with some kids standing near a couple of the open windows.

...

A statement from the school department also paints a different picture of the incident.

"The driver was attempting to ensure that kindergarten students were matched with the proper parent before releasing them from the school bus," the statement reads. Parents became impatient and insisted that the driver release all the students immediately. When the driver refused, one or more parents started to enter the school bus. The driver informed them that adults are not allowed on the school bus with students on board. They refused to leave and the driver was instructed by the Durham supervisor to close the entrance door. Parents broke the door and entered the school bus."

The statement goes on to state that "the school bus driver was also physically assaulted, struck at least two times in the face."

Any "parent" who involved with assault of the driver is charged.

All involved will get a visit from DCF and if necessary have their children removed from their custody.

The route will have a police office assigned to it. The Officer will coordinate the release of students to their legal guardian.

Any parent who sends his child to a government school, without the excuse of a serious hardship, deserves what he gets.

Schools do not own the kids. Parents are in charge, not government agents who are suppose to work for them.

So some parents were in a hurry to get their pilates, and the driver was doing what he is supposed to do. And he gets a beating. What would the outcry be if one the little kids got snatched by someone? He would be drawn and quartered.

“Any parent who sends his child to a government school, without the excuse of a serious hardship, deserves what he gets.”

And those with serious hardships can be treated like crap?

Is that what you’re saying?

It’s the first days of school. Around here you have to have the parent visible to take custody of their child before they can leave the bus. Common practice. The driver says to child...”is that your mommy?” Child answers “yes” and gets off the bus. I imagine if the parents were aggressive it would be hard for the driver to check with each child before they disembark. Gees, what the heck is wrong with people? Patience is a virtue.

“Schools do not own the kids. Parents are in charge, not government agents who are suppose to work for them.”

But while in the custody of the school, the school has the responsibility to ensure they are not released to a child molestor or kidnapper.

Nanny state FAIL. Tries to control everything (like making a bus driver responsible for pairing kids with parents????) and winds up creating chaos.

These parents did not behave like adults. They acted like a bunch of thugs.

THIS. If I entrust my child to someone, even a bus driver, I expect them to take it seriously.

Bingo. The school has this rule because someone's estranged spouse or former lover or a total stranger walked off with a kid. The administration is covering their backsides.

Exactly. When they didn’t get their demand to have the driver release all the kids at once they resorted to threatening and violence.
