Obama at NATO Summit: An Attack Against One Member State Should be Attack Against All of Us
Townhall.com ^ | September 5, 2014 | Daniel Doherty

Speaking to reporters from Newport, Wales -- where numerous nations, including the US, met for a NATO summit on Wednesday -- President Obama delivered a short statement explaining what, exactly, was accomplished.

“First and foremost, we have reaffirmed the central mission of the alliance,” he said. “An armed attack against one [member state] should be an attack [against all of us].”

“It is a binding, treaty obligation,” he continued. “It is non-negotiable.”

What’s more, he noted that the US and its NATO allies will increase “air patrols over the Baltics” and “naval patrols in the Black Sea.” Best of all, he said, “all 28 countries in NATO agreed to commit to these measures.”

These measures, however, also include every member spending "two percent" of GDP on “security measures” from now on.

After all, he said, now is not the time for "complacency.”

But he went further. He announced that NATO will put additional pressure on Russia through targeted sanctions to end their belligerence and occupation of Crimea.

“[NATO will] deepen and broaden sanctions against Russia’s economy and defense sectors,” he said.

Finally, he noted, the NATO alliance is an inclusive body that seeks only willing and able partners.

“We reaffirmed the door to NATO membership remains open to nations who can meet our high standards,” he intoned. “I also leave here confident that NATO allies and leaders are [committed to a] broad international effort [to help fight ISIS]."

“Our alliance will continue to do everything necessary to ensure [the common defense] and protect our citizens,” he said.

I thought that was always one of the basic principles of NATO, that an attack on one member was an attack on all of them. Obama’s wording seems designed to weaken that.

There is a good example of the way Obama’s going to deal with any ‘attack’ on NATO nations (sorry Ukraine, you're not it). Look at ISIS, ISIL, IS whatever.

Obama led anything will seek to destroy but will downgrade and make them ‘manageable’.

You can't surrender to dead terrorists, you know.

The real problem is that we have NO IDEA what the truth is. Obama says whatever, and these guys can put on a better productiion than Steven Spielberg. Putin knows Obama is a manchurian president, and he could easilly called him out for many crimes, that he simply continues to only hint at. They are pretending to have animosity.

What if this is all a plan to put Ukraine in Russians hands? While feigning opposition. This pretense is exactly what Narco Nation’s presidents do in the face the drug trafficking and criminal consequences.

The Deception Called out about Soros in Ukraine

The author claims NATO is the most pro US organization in thw world, but I think the organization has obviously been compromised years ago. Afghanistan is flooding world markets with cheap, pure, dangerous, heroin while NATO nations see no evil.

..."should be".....“It is a binding, treaty obligation,”

I don't get it? "Should be" and "binding" don't seem to fit. Is he speaking in Obama language?

True, “should” seems to be saying that the NATO alliance to defend Europe from Russia, is more of a suggestion of an alliance now.

This is sure a long ways from Reagan, and even George W. who wanted Ukraine in NATO, the only thing that save the free world from Russia before, was the certainty of NATO unity and resolve.

Right, Ukraine is not a member of NATO, but Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are, and all have Russian-speaking minorities. They could be next on Putin’s menu after he takes as much of Ukraine as he wants.

Article 5 of the NATO Charter:

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.

“An armed attack against one [member state] should be an attack [against all of us].”

What he is telegraphing to our enemies and his Muslim friends is - if you are going to attack one of us - may as well attack all of us because the United States aint gonna do jack squat about it...

"Ukraine is not a member of NATO"

Which is why Caliph Obama made this sort of speech. Were Ukraine actually a member of NATO, he would have made a speech about how all organized violence supported by an outside nation doesn't rise to the level of an attack on a member nation.

The operative word here is “should”. So its meaningless like everything else he says.

Just more palaver from the pompous pontificating purveyor of platitudes. ;)
