Joan Rivers passed away today after suffering complications during surgery.
She was 81.
NBC News reported:
Raspy-voiced and brassy, Rivers was always self-deprecating, foul-mouthed and politically incorrect. A master of reinvention, she endured in show business because of her tenacious work ethic — which she credited to her “immigrant mentality.”
Comedians typically push the envelope, but Rivers proved time and again that she didn’t even see the envelope. To her fans, she was as shocking as she was endearing.
“The way she is funny, she tells the truth according to herself,” the late film critic Roger Ebert wrote in 2010. “She hates some people. She has political opinions. Her observations are so merciless and her timing so precise that even if you like that person, you laugh. She is a sadist of comedy, unafraid to be cruel — even too cruel.”
No topic was off limits. From Elizabeth Taylor to Queen Elizabeth to even Anne Frank, Rivers loved going after public figures.
“I mock everybody, regardless of race, creed or color,” she told the Toronto Star in July. “Every joke I make, no matter how tasteless, is there to draw attention to something I really care about.”
Well, she died doing what she loved. Having surgery.
I found her pretty funny for years, but lately felt her humor was a little vulgar for someone her age. Probably just me.
As someone who’s works in the operating room, I can’t imagine what the team at the Clinic is going through. Oh well...
Then there was her Geico ad. “Honey, this face has seen more knives than a Benihana”. Priceless.

The clinic touted itself as “state of the art” and that their “facility offers features comparable to those available in any hospital”.
Ummm, not so much.
I’m sure her family has hired lawyers to look into this “facility”.
Not sure about that, but a 93 year old man had previously sued one of the docs at this clinic, for complications following a gastro procedure. He contracted pneumonia, and said he was not given proper pre-op instructions.
“Say hello to Johnny Carson, Phyllis Diller and Bob Hope for us.”

I’m an MD, and I’m trying to find some outlet that will explain to us what happened and why the family stopped life support so quickly. As soon as she stopped breathing you would think they could intubate her and breath for her, unless she suffered other complications or they were unable to intubate her. Was she in a hospital or office?
Scary. You would think she would have gotten a nice jewish doctor.
I read somewhere it was Yorkville Endoscopy, upper east side,just opened in 2013 and is physician owned. It’s hard to say what happened. It’s not even known exactly what she was having done. I can imagine a few scenarios though.
Julie's office was next door to mine in West Los Angeles at the time of that incident, and I recall her being quite pissed about it all; I'm sure her "work" was done here in L.A.

I'm guessing there's truth to this....when my mother was dying of congestive heart failure/pneumonia (complications from a broken hip at age 87), my sister stayed in the hospital room 24/7 for the last 10 days....the nurses allowed her to use a small suction device in Mom's mouth if she "gurgled" (She was in a deep sleep for the last 48 hours).
Wifey and I were there when sis went to do this once and immediately Mom started gagging and coughing - we called the nurses station and they ran in - at this point her oxygen saturation dropped to zero, she turned white and her heart stopped and she was gone.
Sister was mortified and wailing that she'd been at fault - the nurses assured her, but I'd not be surprised if she still feels responsible.
Oh yeah- THAT is what you want to see when you are on a table, helpless-a grim reaper looking death cultist! I wouldn’t let ANY one of them near me or mine, for ANY reason.
She died doing what she loved best: Plastic surgery. /s
Considering her comedic style, she’d appreciate that one.

I’ve been wanting to post my conspiracy theory since Joan Rivers was taken to the ICU. I feel safer here than anywhere else, b/c I think it’s pretty far out, but here goes. Does anyone else think that it’s weird that a month after Joan Rivers outed Obama as a homosexual and Michelle as a transsexual, that she ends up dead? Reaching for the tinfoil.
I have no medical backround but is it possible that they were working on her for a while after the heart attack (or whatever) before they noticed it? She stops breathing, you get air into her lungs and get her lungs pumping until you get to a hospital? Am I watching too much TV?
