Polish navy tests Barak-8 missile

The Polish navy is evaluating the Israeli developed Barak-8 missile for the protection of its new navy ships.

With a top speed of Mach 2 and a maximum operational range of 38nm (70km), the Barak-8 is 4.5m (14.8ft) long and has a diameter of 0.54m. Its wingspan is 0.94m and it weighs 275kg (606lb), including a 60kg payload.

Developed based on an agreement signed in 2007 between India and Israel, it has been selected by the Indian navy.

According to the India media, the initial co-development cost was about $350 million, 50% of which was financed by Israel Aerospace Industries. The Israeli company says the missile is highly maneuverable at target interception range.

The Barak-8 is designed to counter a wide variety of airborne threats, such as anti-ship missiles, aircraft, unmanned air vehicles and supersonic cruise missiles.

India is arming its aircraft carriers and front-line warships with Barak-8s to protect them against strike aircraft and anti-ship missiles. The missile will be fitted to at least 14 Indian warships.

A land-based short-, medium- and long-range version is also available. One new potential market is protecting offshore oil and gas rigs from marine and aerial threats.

IAI and Rafael are offering the Barak-8 with different types of radar systems made by IAI subsidiary Elta Systems.

Let's hope so--there are old scores to be settled.

Bad move, naming the missile Barak.

It doesn't work and you can't fire it. But if you somehow get it off its pad, it will fly wildly to the left.

Every missile will zero in on the closest golf course.

Poland would do well to bring in Israeli trainers and advisers for their military. Can’t go wrong with that tactic.

You push the button and it waits a month to launch.

Bad move, naming the missile Barak.

They named it that because they don't have a strategy for using it yet.

“...operational range of 38nm...”

Noting to worry about here. It simply grunts and sits there.

Right now in Kielce, Poland, there is taking place an internation military fair.
MSPO Kielce Trade fair for military technology MSPO is an international defence industry exhibition and Central Europe's most significant fair event of this kind. It features not only the latest achievements in military equipment and armaments but also technologies and systems applied in fields such as logistics, security and rescue. A permanent element of MSPO is an exhibition of the Polish Armed Forces. In addition to the static exhibition, visitors have the opportunity to attend a demonstration of soldiers' practical operations. The MSPO will take place on 4 days from Monday, 01. September to Thursday, 04. September 2014 in Kielce.
I have read that Polish government has already signed a deal for 70 new assault helicopters and have opened a tender (?? don't know if this is the proper world in english) for another batch of helicopters that will take place of the Mi - 24 we are still using.
During this fair as well, we had the first opportunity to really see a MSBS assault rifle. First rifle in Polish army since 1989 that will not be based on kbk AKM (updated version of AK-47), but a rifle that was created by Polish engineers from scratch.
During last year MSPO Polish Ministry of Defence has presented a Polish - made PL-01, armoured fighting vehicle.
That's just for the information of freepers who like military novelties :)
