Congress's loudest immigrant rights advocate delivered a terse message Wednesday to the Senate Democrats who are urging President Obama to delay executive action on deportations until after the election: Get out of the way.
"I say to the Democrats: Stand aside," Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) said during a press call. "Let the president make a decision; let him announce it; and stop this stopping the progress of our community towards justice."
In June, Obama warned GOP leaders that, in the absence of congressional action on immigration reform, he would consider unilateral policy changes recommended by top administration officials "before the end of the summer" and adopt them "without further delay."
But a number of Senate Democrats facing tough reelection bids this year have pushed back against that plan, wary that new executive actions would energize GOP voters who oppose immigration reform and feel Obama is prone to abusing his executive powers.
The White House in recent days has walked back Obamas "end of the summer promise, insisting there is no timetable for potential executive action.
"It's hard for me to, at least at this point, draw any clear conclusions about what the president's timing will be," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday. "There is the chance that it could be before the end of the summer. There is the chance that it could be after the summer."
Gutiérrez, joined by a long list of immigrant rights advocates, says any delay would be a mistake both politically and in policy terms.
"It is better that the president make a decision now and then let people know what that public policy is before they go to the [polls]. Why wait until after the election?" he argued. "We [Democrats] may lose seats in the House; we may lose seats in the Senate. And then [critics] will simply say, 'Oh, there they go protecting those immigrants afterwards. Why didn't they do it before? Because they were afraid.'
"Let's not be afraid."
Asked which Democratic senators he was asking to "stand aside," Gutiérrez said, "Any and all of those Democrats who have asked for the president to delay, whether they've done it publicly or unbeknownst to us."

“progress of our community towards justice”
How is giving amnesty to 12 million law breakers “Justice”?
No. Chicago is one city in one state, though corrupt to the core and the home of at least 1 million illegals. Excise Chicago and Cook County from Illinois and Illinois is a very conservative state, with traditional American values.
Excise Chicago and Cook County from the state and Democrats would not only be a minority party, but would be close to extinction.
California used to be that way, with just the Bay Area a toxic cancer. However, the rest of that state — with a handful of exceptions — has within the last two generations swallowed the Kool-Aid and gone over to the dark side.
California cannot be saved. And it hurts me to say that because I was born and raised in California, and it used to be paradise. But then the lefties (i.e., Democrats) co-opted everything and destroyed it.
I agreed with the Congressman. The members of his community deserve justice. Justice in this case means the full penalties of the laws that they have broken be visited upon them, whether IRS or Welfare or fraud or identity theft or ... .
Looie needs to be told to STFU.
Gutiérrez is not from “south of the border”, he is from Puerto Rico.
Obama’s going to do it, but after the election because the DUMBASSES that VOTE Democrat might stay home if he did it before.

If Luis loves these illegals so much, why doesn’t he go back to his home country so he could be surrounded by them 24/7. He must get really tired of being around all those white senators and congressmen. Go home Luis and quit trying to turn the USA into a third world country like the one you and your family escaped from. Geesh...
He truly a repulsive person. It would not take long for Andrew Jackson to handle the situation.
No, let them know that Obama will not keep his promise and that pro amnesty folks have been duped.
