GutiƩrrez to Sen Dems: 'Stand aside'- 'better that the president make a decision now'

Congress's loudest immigrant rights advocate delivered a terse message Wednesday to the Senate Democrats who are urging President Obama to delay executive action on deportations until after the election: Get out of the way.

"I say to the Democrats: Stand aside," Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) said during a press call. "Let the president make a decision; let him announce it; and stop this stopping the progress of our community towards justice."

In June, Obama warned GOP leaders that, in the absence of congressional action on immigration reform, he would consider unilateral policy changes recommended by top administration officials "before the end of the summer" and adopt them "without further delay."

But a number of Senate Democrats facing tough reelection bids this year have pushed back against that plan, wary that new executive actions would energize GOP voters who oppose immigration reform and feel Obama is prone to abusing his executive powers.

The White House in recent days has walked back Obama’s "end of the summer” promise, insisting there is no timetable for potential executive action.

"It's hard for me to, at least at this point, draw any clear conclusions about what the president's timing will be," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday. "There is the chance that it could be before the end of the summer. There is the chance that it could be after the summer."

Gutiérrez, joined by a long list of immigrant rights advocates, says any delay would be a mistake both politically and in policy terms.

"It is better that the president make a decision now … and then let … people know what that public policy is before they go to the [polls]. Why wait until after the election?" he argued. "We [Democrats] may lose seats in the House; we may lose seats in the Senate. And then [critics] will simply say, 'Oh, there they go protecting those immigrants afterwards. Why didn't they do it before? Because they were afraid.'

"Let's not be afraid."

Asked which Democratic senators he was asking to "stand aside," Gutiérrez said, "Any and all of those Democrats who have asked for the president to delay, whether they've done it publicly or unbeknownst to us."

Illinois makes California seem sane by comparison. Luis needs to ride a cactus back to whatever south of the border patch of scrub he crawled out of.

The GOP need to get out the message, before the Nov. election, that Obama is only delaying the amnesty ruling for political purposes and that he will still issue the ruling.

It's as safe as the FDIC guarantee on the first $250K in the bank.

I knew the moment the White House announced that Obama’s unilateral action with his “phone and his pen” on immigration amnesty was not going to happened as previously announced for the end of the summer, that this lisp-speaking, limp-wristed Gutierrez would get his panties all in a twist over this. He was bragging the last two weeks for everyone to “get ready” for Obama’s amnesty anytime. Now he has egg on his face and is pleading with his fellow democRATS who are up for reelection in tight races to just give up their jobs for his pet project to go through. It may still happen yet after the elections but he is not a happy camper right now.

Gutiérrez is a bit persnickety because he had been going around crowing all summer that Obama had personally guaranteed him full and complete amnesty and work permits for 5 million illegal by executive order before labor day... Well, labor day has come and gone with nothing but another golf game for Obama. Now poor Gutti has egg on his face and looks like an idiot for running his mouth...

republican should rightly argue that he is hiding his amnesty plans exactly like he hid the multitude of perversities in ACA until after the election.

because that’s exactly what happened.

Illinois rat senator needs to realize Odumber hasn’t made a decision since he’s occupied the WH! Maybe about tee time, but nothing else. His puppeteers want him out golfing & out of the way.

By all means, please do this Obama! Maybe that will assure that some of your buds get to go back home this winter. These illegals will never be happy regardless of what you do. Once the genie gets out of the bottle there will be no way to stop the overflow of illegals coming into this country.

"I say to the Democrats: Stand aside," Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) said during a press call. "Let the president make a decision; let him announce it; and stop this stopping the progress of our community towards justice."

I am a big fan of justice also. Legal immigrants should be welcomed, and we should protect all of their legal rights to ensure equal justice under the law. Illegal immigrants should be welcomed with the full force and power of the law, and they should be fingerprinted and DNA swabbed to help deny them any path to legal entry ever - and then they should receive the deportation demanded by justice. We all claim to want justice, but conservatives want the real thing unlike this thug who just wants lawlessness.
