Recreational Pot Not Bringing In Tax Money That Was Expected

High hopes for tax money isn’t as expected as the state’s legal marijuana industry isn’t bringing in as much money as anticipated. In fact, tax revenue is way below expectations.

When voters approved recreational marijuana sales the state predicted it would pull in more than $33 million in new taxes in the first six months. The actual revenue came up more than $21 million short.

The problem is that buying pot is less expensive on the streets where people don’t have to pay taxes or fees.

Medical marijuana is also less expensive than recreational pot, so those with medical cards are sticking to buying that way.

I’m all for asset forfeitures.

That ten grand in cash you have in your truck is drug money. Pure and simple.

If you have proof - show it. The trouble is - NOBODY can deny it. It’s easier for the couriers to walk away from that money than it is to go legal. The cartels know and understand this. Its a cost of doing business.

What I don’t understand is why you want to hand this money back to the drug cartels?

Ahh, yes. Guilty until proven innocent. The American way.

Then the last thing you want for America is freedom. You want an all powerful police state that snoops into things that are none of its business and takes things that are not theirs. You are as bad as Obama wanting to destroy the Constitution for selfish reasons.

I’d rather be a libertarian than a totalitarian.

If I have ten grand in my truck, it is definitely NOT drug money.

Keep your effing grubby paws off my cash, or I'll hang them from my mirror like fuzzy dice.

No charges were brought.

Ironically the only way to stop this "illegal" pot is to impose harsh penalties...the war on drugs continues!

Liberal leftist potheads are just like all liberal leftists...they have a delusional view of how people actually behave.

Indeed - law enforcement can seize your assets & keep them because of mere suspicion of drug activity i.e. without an actual conviction.

Which makes asset forfeiture laws especially offensive.

And you support them.

(And why are you saying "no charges were brought"? Your original post makes zero indication you are talking about a particular forfeiture, just forfeitures in general).

Yeah and stupid me. I used to buy cigs mail order from Switzerland at a highly reduced cost but got spooked out of concern that the local tax folks would demand back tobacco taxes on them. How is that any different than buying a carton on a cruise ship and bringing it ashore? I don’t know. For personal consumption and not for resale. Oh well. I guess the stoners don’t care. If they go to jail, will the state pay for their weed then?

Democrats passed it because they needed more tax revenue.

Watch them go nuts now.

It’s hard to compete with the mexican drug cartels. After all, they don’t have to pay any taxes or fees, and their labor doesn’t either. As a matter of fact, we subsidize the cartels’ labor through EBT, free housing and medical, and guarantee them safe passage across the border. Even our DOJ and BP sell them guns, and babysit their kids. Who in their right mind would want to sell dope above board, when uncle sam is giving the competition such a sweet deal?

Yet the same political ruling class in CO think that they can pass laws to eliminate guns from the streets....

“I’m all for asset forfeitures.

Just wow. You can quit claiming to be FOR individual liberty now.

This weekend I watched a 3 part special on PBS titled, “Prohibition.” The temperence movement’s ties to the beginning of progressivism in the 1850’s was astounding. Their arguments are still being used today and many of your earlier posts were similar.....

Then I see this admission from you that you prefer to be “secure from druggies and libertarians” at the expense of property rights. You are no different from the gun grabbers that desire “security from gun violence” at the expense of their liberty.

You can pass millions of laws, and you will still never be free from “druggies and libertarians.” Yet, you are willing to sacrifice all liberty for such dreams.

Free Republic hysteria over marihuana is crazy isn’t it

I surmise its due to their association of libtards with weed

But as you know

Where we live...Dixie

Weed smokers....white weed smokers in the South...are more likely to be God Guns and Guts anti progressives

Tax and spend liberals are to blame there. The black market should NEVER be cheaper than the white, if it is taxes are too high.

You equate “druggies and libertarians” as the same as 2nd Amendment activists.

Let that sink in your punkin for a minute.

You equate “druggies and libertarians” as the same as 2nd Amendment activists.

You really believe some stoner using and abusing the freedoms we hold dear is as valid as a right as is the right to bear arms.

Just wow indeed.

Understand this. With great freedom comes great responsibility. Your willingness - your eagerness even - to hand over my freedoms so that your kind can get high is laughable.

I don’t care how much money it brings in to the state. Anything that undermines the WoD is a good thing. Now if only we could start rolling back the damage it has done to the Constitution, we’d be getting somewhere. I don’t see any indication of that happening though. The powers that be have gotten a lot of what they wanted out of it.

“You equate “druggies and libertarians” as the same as 2nd Amendment activists.”

If I have no right to consume whatever I desire, then I have no right to my physical being. In that case, I have nothing to defend by utilizing the 2nd ammendment.

“With great freedom comes great responsibility.”

On that we are in complete agreement.

“Your willingness - your eagerness even - to hand over my freedoms so that your kind can get high is laughable.”

What freedoms do you lose when someone consumes an intoxicant? BTW, I don’t “get high,” but I am willing to let someone else “get high” so that I am free.

Re-read your posts. You will see that your arguments and judgemental tone is very reminiscent of the Women’s Temperance Auxilary of the late 1800’s. But hey, history is meaningless, we will do it better this time.....
