Begich under fire for politicizing the sexual assault of a 2 year old

Call this the case of political backfire. Big time.

Incumbent Alaskan Senator, Mark Begich, put up an ad over the weekend that was intended to make his Republican opponent, Dan Sullivan, appear soft on child rape. Or something.

Instead, today, the Democrat Senator is under heavy fire from the victim’s family, who are demanding removal of the “shocking” ad and any future references, “either directly or indirectly.”

The family’s lawyer also said that Begich was “tearing apart” the family and “playing pure politics at the expense” of his clients.

But on Monday, the family’s attorney, Bryon Collins, issued a letter calling for the Begich campaign to “unconditionally order the removal of ALL ads and references to anything to do with the case,” either directly or indirectly, and lambasting the senator for “playing pure politics at the expense of my clients.”

“You are tearing this family apart to the point that your ad was so shocking to them they now want to permanently leave the state as quickly as possible. Again, to be perfectly clear, it was your ad that shocked them,” Collins writes in the letter.

This Tweet sums it up succinctly:

An elderly AK couple was murdered. Their 2-year-old granddaughter was sexually assaulted. So Begich cut a campaign ad.

What a low-life scum bag, Mark Begich is. Thank God this is blowing up in his fat, ugly face. From another Post here on FR, he has pulled the Ad.

Don’t see how this is all that different from using Willie Horton in a campaign ad.

But then I don’t know a thing about AK poliics.

Being a Democrat usually means being able to use any gutter campaign add you can dream up and never having to say you are sorry for it. I guess making pedophilia a campaign issue is too much even for the Dems, probably because they view it as just another lifestyle choice.

You don't see the difference between using a murderer's name in an ad and using a murder victim's name in an ad?

Big difference. Governor Dukakis personally signed the Willie Horton's pass. He could have refused to sign it and Willie Horton would have been in prison instead of out on a weekend pass.

Yeah, just like with the Horton ad, Al Gore did it first, but they will blame it on the Republican.

Haven’t seen the ad or really even a description of it, only the reaction to it. Was not aware they used the family’s name.

My bad.

Would help if articles contained a description of why the family was unhappy. Not just the fact that they were.

Bingo. well said. There is the matter of personal responsibility. When someone says “ I don’t see any difference between A or B”... I generally discount their comments. There are almost always differences.

Willie Horton was the SUBJECT of the ad in that case. Also, Al Gore a DMEOCRAT was the first to bring up Willie Horton.

In this case? The VICTIMS were the subjects of the ad.

Besides which? What side are you on?

You know, I still haven’t seen the ad, or even a description of the ad, only articles about people objecting to it.

If you have a link, I’d be glad to take a look and see whether I think the outrage is appropriate. Quite likely it is.

Also see my second post above.

I don’t know about this case, but I know AK voters disappoint more so than not.

Your uncle sounds like an intelligent person. Begich used to be Mayor of Anchorage, they now call him mayor "Baggage".

He used the political assassination of a good man to get elected the first time. He is a typical Democrat. There is no low he will not stoop to, if it gets him elected.

Let's send him packing, I sincerely hope he leaves Alaska as a result.

Sarah Palin cleaned up the Republican party in Alaska, at least for a little while. My only beef with her is she did not do the same for the Dumocrats while she was at it.

With Dan Sullivan bruised by a nasty primary, Begich thought this would be the knockout blow. Problem is that the mistake that caused the perp to be let out too early happened before Sullivan became Attorney General and the Sullivan campaign quickly pointed this out. In fact, the attack may be backfiring on Begich.

It’s easy to be angered over this ugly attack, but I’m glad it happened. If Mark Begich was confident of reelection, he would never have run this ad in the first place. This proves that he’s fearful of losing, which means his internal poll numbers have to be bad. Chances are they’ll only get worse now. I now think Sullivan has slightly more than a 50/50 chance of winning.

Here’s an editorial on the issue:
