Former IAF Chief Maj. Gen. (res.) David Ivry says, in a new article, that Israel needs to rethink the concepts of deterrence and decisive victory, which are less relevant in today's assymetrical battlefields.
Limited-scale, asymmetrical conflicts have become the norm. All-out wars between states where both parties invest all of their national resources in an attempt to achieve a decisive victory have become less relevant, writes Ivry, who is now President of Boeing Israel, in a paper for the BESA Center.
David Ben-Gurions conceptual trinity of deterrence, early warning and decisive victory is no longer fully valid, he explains. These concepts should no longer be used as the only or main criterion when evaluating military and political moves made in the context of the new situation.
While deterrence remains relevant to preventing total war, we may lose the ability to deter violence in specific situations, such as launching rockets at Israel by terrorist organizations, he posits, and in the context of limited-scale conflicts, partial military victories are attainable even if no decisive victory is achieved.

All the years of usefulness have reached an end, Former IAF Chief Maj. Gen. (res.) David Ivry? Ruse!!!
Let’s have one of those “decisive victories”, and see what he says then.
I don’t know Ivry, but he sounds like a Liberal that is saying their plan didn’t work, and now wants to move the goal posts in favor of their erroneous plan. We’ve seen this before with Liberals. Many times. Don’t learn from adversity, just change the rules, and do the same thing only to repeat the same result, and declare themselves the winners.
Fire him.
NOW!
Some raiders have larger and better weapons.
Eventually, Islam will force the final game of Cowboys & Muslims.
For us it will be a video game, for them the end of their world.
Only mindless, goat f*cking, boy raping, neck cutting Sand Savages could believe attacks on Americans in America will have any other result than what happened when Americans played Cowboys & Indians.
Those with the accumulated genetic deficits acquired during 1,400 years of first cousin incest are ill advised to consider attacking Israel of America.
That any of the Palisimians/Hamasimians exist is due to the mercy and Judeo-Christian charity of America and Israel. Palisimians not only can’t pay their electricity bills, they allow the Hamasimians to destroy the power lines from Israel which bring the electricity to bring them out of the Dark Ages to which they aspire to return.
IMHO, such forbearance and sacrifice is both historically and Biblically a most serious error. History makes clear the accuracy of Winston Churchill’s observations regarding Islam, found in The River War, published in 1899.
For the Biblically inclined, G*d commanded the Israelites to extirpate certain peoples. Given the behavior of those spared, from then to now, arguable G*d knew what he was doing with those commands.
We could, however, show that we finally understood the Divine will and managed to muster sufficient understanding and courage to belatedly carry out His command.
:-)
For that you need a decisive leader. Since we don’t have one in Bibi, let’s just make sure he does plenty to appease his base, such as opening up more hitnachaluyot (”settlements”).
Then vote him out for a decisive leader.
Israel's enemies are now crumbling before its very eyes. The surrounding artificial nation states whose armies have threatened Israel existence since its founding are rapidly disintegrating into the tribal factions from which they were cobbled together. Lebanon fell apart years ago, but now Syria and Iraq are melting away, and Jordan will soon be exposed to marauding Islamist savages. Libya is gone, and what remains of Egypt has not been hostile to Israel in decades. Threats will almost certainly rise again from IS or from more distant conquerors, but for now Israelis must be pinching themselves and wondering what kind of miracle has laid waist to their enemies without Israel even firing a shot.
Without firing a shot? We just went through a nasty little war, where we were forced to slaughter women and children who were deliberately placed in harm’s way in order to score PR points against us and have the usual whores compare our troops to Nazis. What’s worse is that it was ended prematurely and it’s liable to start again any time, and not necessarily with the same minimal casualties on our side, though surely with the same subhuman behavior on theirs.
I believe you misread my post. Gaza is not a sovereign nation, and while it is a major nuisance, Gaza does not pose an existential threat to Israel. My point is the sudden dissolution of Syria, Iraq and Libya and the growing threat to secular Muslim governments in Jordan and Egypt.
