The Iraqi army backed by volunteer fighters have broken through the Islamic State group siege on the town of Amerli located between the capital, Baghdad, and northern city of Kirkuk, sources have told Al Jazeera.
Iraqi forces and the militia entered the city on Sunday, where thousands of people have been trapped for over two months with dwindling food and water.
"Our forces entered Amerli and broke the siege," security spokesman Lieutenant General Qassem Atta told AFP news agency.
Sources on the ground told Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf that the Iraqi soldiers were backed by "Shia militia".
On Saturday, the US military attacked Islamic State positions and airdropped humanitarian aid to the trapped civilians, mostly Shia Turkomen minority.
US jets and drones have also attacked the Islamic State group's positions near Iraq's Mosul Dam.
In the previous weeks, the US forces have conducted airstrikes in support of Iraqi and Kurdish forces on the ground, fighting against the Islamic State, which controls large areas in Syria and Iraq.

It depends upon the particular sub-culture. Some cultures view pork like Americans would view the idea of eating rat meat. In others, it's just religiously forbidden.

We could come up with different acronyms for Islamic State & spread the word... They’ve already changed their name 3 times in 3 months & still the media, etc use all 3 interchangeably.. rebrand them..how about IF (Islamic Fit), then IP (Islamic Pit) for IT (Islamic THUGS).. Possibilities are infinite!
