Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: America’s Dark Obsession With Vigilante Justice
Time Magazine ^ | August 27, 2014 | Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Posted on 08/29/2014 12:46:11 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Our belief that the government wants to help us achieve fairness is lower than ever—leading to fantasies of lawless revenge.

The events in Ferguson and elsewhere across the U.S. have launched a heated national dialogue that questions our faith in the benevolence of government institutions — especially police, judiciary, and politicians. Dead black bodies always makes us wonder whether they really have the best interests of the American people at heart, or just the best interests of some American people. Sometimes in the dense fog of passion and tear gas it is hard to see what values a country as diverse as America really shares. One way to check the heart of American attitudes is to lay our fingers on the pulse of pop culture, which often subtly reveals the truth long before the news pundits compulsively check their Twitter to see what’s trending and chase after it.

One pop culture truth that has clearly emerged over the last few years is that the sharp rise of vigilante heroes in our books, TV, and movies is supplanting the traditional cultural heroes of the precinct, ER, and courtroom. I’m not talking about Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Avengers, or any other super-powered beings fighting other super-powered beings. That’s adventure-fantasy that has little to do with the political or social landscape. I’m talking about our grim-faced, non-powered heroes who, realizing that government is either too impotent or too corrupt to deliver justice, take up arms against the sea of troubles — and by opposing, end them....

I would admit I started reading the whole article with a jaundiced view. His writing and ability to craft his position is very well done and I find a lot to applaud.

Sorry, I’m not going to give any credence to a Sunni terrorist. We have one in the White Hut right now.

Neglects to mention Black Panthers, the Ferguson (et al) mobs, the desecration of Christian churches, the LGBT indoctrination in schools, etc. which are fueled by revenge.

it depends on who he thinks are vigilantes.

black thug rioters and looters, robbers that would bash a cops’ face in and then charge at him.

or law-abiding citizens who carry for self-defense purposes.

i can tell you i know of zero ccw folks who actively goes out looking for a reason to use their gun. an i know a lot of them. first you don’t go looking for trouble. you just want to have a chance if trouble finds you. second you don’t want trouble to find you, you are not a willing participant.

funny.

‘vigilante justice’ is the law enforced by citizens. of course, anyone that’s in favor of big govt would be against that, as it undermines police authority... and the control of big govt

my heavens. what ever would we do if king george wasn’t in the big house protecting us?

You actually think he wrote this? Then you must think that Obama writes his own speeches.

Frankly Lou I’ve always considered you and the rest of the name changers to be part of the problem. Unfortunately my computer bombed when I went to Time to read the article so I’m left with the excerpt and that ain’t much.

From the ending of his article,

"There are times when the individual should stand up to the communal notions of right and wrong, as did Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Medgar Evers, and Gloria Steinem. But they did it with words, with courage, with intellect — not with violence."

He then concludes:

"My hope is that we use the abundance of vigilante literature to fuel our outrage at injustice and to inspire us to, rather than cynically pull a trigger, fix what’s broken in our system through peaceful protest and the ballot box."

He follows the popular agnostic notion of worldly righteousness based upon relative morality independent of God and His Plan. He might become more educated if he studied Church History and how different Christian denominations came into the Americas from the 15th-18th centuries prior leading into the formation of the US Constitutional governance.

IMHO, there is a much larger percentage of the American demographic influenced by relative morality and comparative religious perspectives than Christian zealots seeking vigilante-ism.

Lots of angry closet LGBT, blacks, Latinos, even Zen-Buddhists out there who would just as soon exact vigilante justice at the ballot box as they would execute known murdering street criminals.

Those days have come and gone. Protests are what race pimps and Occupy Wall Street loons do. The ballot box has been destroyed by massive voter fraud organized by the left. The soap box and ballot box seem destined to give way top the cartridge box and pine box....

If you check out his Wikipedia page you'll find that he's written a number of books on a wide range of subjects.

After reading an article he wrote in the aftermath of that incident with the old guy who owns the L.A. Clippers I realized that Kareem Abdul Jabbar is a very smart, self-educated guy.
