U.S. Official Says 1,000 Russian Troops Have Entered Ukraine By Victoria Butenko, Laura Smith-Spark and Diana Magnay, CNN August 28, 2014

Kiev, Ukraine (CNN) -- A top Ukrainian army officer said a "full-scale invasion" of his country was under way Thursday, as a U.S. official said up to 1,000 Russian troops had crossed Ukraine's southern border to fight alongside pro-Russian rebels.

U.S. officials said Russian troops were directly involved in the latest fighting, despite Moscow's denials.

Rebels backed by Russian tanks and armored personnel carriers fought Ukrainian forces on two fronts Thursday: southeast of rebel-held Donetsk, and along the nation's southern coast in the town of Novoazovsk, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the Russian border, said Mykhailo Lysenko, the deputy commander of the Ukrainian Donbas battalion.

"This is a full-scale invasion," Lysenko said, referring to the fighting in the south.

It hasn’t been “free” long enough to have built up the economy enough to be able to hold up in any real war. They were doing fine against the “rebels” before Russia joined in.

In 1993 Ukraine had the military mostly equal to US in terms of manpower and a number of assets.
It was only behind in a naval ships, but ahead of US in tanks and IFVs, and probably in nukes too.

They might have men in uniform and some stuff, but they most obviously are not "equal" in training and in substance. Do they have any real air force? satellites? counter-battery radar?

I saw a report of soldiers with a pick-up on the road between the Russians and Mariupol, they didn't even have good enough RPG's to take out a tank. Those guys wouldn't even be a speed bump to a Russian Army armored column.

~Do they have any real air force? satellites? counter-battery radar?~

They had it all, including dozens of strategic bombers capable for a strikes worldwide. And their companies built satellites for a Soviet military.
Unfortunately, the capabilities are gone. And it wasn’t Yanukovich who blew it.

A tribute to a (long gone) Ukrainian Air Force.

They went down hill pretty fast it seems like.

Russia knows. Use it or lose it.

One would think that Poland and Georgia would at least send token troops to northern Ukraine to free up Ukraine troops to go south.

Chit, we had that many "clandestine operatives" hanging around bars in Cairo and that many more helping organize the mobs when we were helping the MB takeover Egypt.

Everybody on this board has criticized Obungo for helping MB take Egypt.

Now let's see your criticism of Putin's action in Ukraine.

They gave the bombers back to Russia in the 90’s along with the nukes apparently. They were set up.

~They went down hill pretty fast it seems like.~

What we see in Ukraine is a clique of corrupt oligarchs and sellout politicians engaging in cycles of political prostitution for decades. Blaming Russia or it’s puppets for situation in Ukraine is plain stupid. They had at least two cycles dominated by Western puppets who have run the country absolutely same way, to be ousted in some form of uprising and replaced by Russian puppets, all in a period of just two decades. The West is risking right now backing Poroshenko. In a few years he might disappoint his supporters and there would be another fight at maidan. Just like Russia was bashed this time with Yanukovich, they would bring Poroshenko geopolitic orientation to condemn America and EU there.

~One would think that Poland and Georgia would at least send token troops ~

You aren’t following the situation carefully. Georgia is pro-Russian right now. A president who started an August War is a wanted fugitive exiled in Manhattan. All members of his administration who haven’t run are jailed for their abuses.
As for Poland it is not that stupid.

In fact they returned a few run-down Blackjacks. Best ones were bulldozed, just like a hundred of low-hour Backfires, not to mention less valuable but still potent platforms.

criticism of Putin's action in Ukraine

It sucks but you reap what you sow and it's been coming somewhere Russia could reach ever since NATO created the Iz Lame Ick State of Kosovo out of thin air. Like elections, carving pieces out of countries and making new ones has consequences.

Ukraine has been a corrupt mess since it gained independence. Maybe this will straighten out the corruptin in Kiev, maybe not. Personally, I hope they go the route of federation and stay in one piece but I doubt it'll ever get Crimea back. If Kiev doesn't change the country is going to fall apart sooner or later even if Russia turned tame and docile tomorrow morning.

The Ukrainians didn't sow anything in the former Yugo. They do not deserve to be invaded by Russia.

Simple concept.

I would think all here would embrace it.

"The Ukrainians didn't sow anything in the former Yugo."

Fine, then it all comes down to the US backing and encouraging the Kiev Coup Kiddies followed by demanding that Candyman use force in Eastern Ukraine instead of negotiating with Separatists the way he said he planned to when running for President of Ukraine. I'm glad to see you agree with me.

Now that you've accepted that much reality, when Yarosh and his thug pals follow through on his threat to withdraw private little armies from the East and ". . . march into Kiev to carry out speedy reforms in the Interior Ministry" maybe you'll finally realize that it's a senseless Civil War that could have been avoided. The crux of the problem is the US Caliph Obama crowd was anxious to do what the US promised Russia they never would do with regard to NATO along with rewarding their pals in the EU with a slice of what the Ukrainian crooks have been siphoning off of Ukraine through corruption for the past twenty plus years.

Then when Caliph Obama starts back tracking at a rapid pace and the EU decides to cut their losses by renegging what the IMF will dole out to Ukraine you can finally admit the whole of reality which is that there never should have been a Civil War and without US meddling there never would have been.

Stuff it. Your, "Now let's see . . ." as if you're the final arbiter of all things moral rates nothing but, "you and the horse you rode in on, your bootmaker, saddlemaker, the livery boy who cares for your horse, and the saloon girl you hang with twice".

You want to know why I disagree with you, fine, ask me to explain. Save your little games for the kiddies who like to come here and stroke one aothers fantasies.

Wow.

My mistake for assuming that you would be critical of Putin's thuggish expansionist actions in the sovereign country of Ukraine.

And the person acting like a kid having a tantrum is you.

Pretty much everybody sees that now except you.
