The AP is reporting that the Russians are saying these troops are “on leave” and technically are fighting in Ukraine as volunteers.
Odd, I know of no other military that let troops take tanks, APCs, artillery pieces, their personal weapons, ammunition, etc with them “on leave.”

ISIS is a horrific threat. The civilized world has to realize that it can no longer expend resources to assist Kiev in attacking its own citizens.

I think Obama has such an ego problem - as does Kerry - that failure or being bested makes them take their ball and go home - or something like that.
It could be political vanity. This Ukraine business does not make Obama look good because he can't influence events there much and thus he can't be seen involving himself.
The consequences of this down the line is the Europeans are going to start wondering why the need to follow America's lead after this if in Europe it is Germany and not the US doing all the diplomacy?
