A former AP correspondent explains why reporters get Israel so wrong
Tablet Magazine ^ | August 26, 2014 | Matti Friedman

The lasting importance of this summer’s war, I believe, doesn’t lie in the war itself. It lies instead in the way the war has been described and responded to abroad, and the way this has laid bare the resurgence of an old, twisted pattern of thought and its migration from the margins to the mainstream of Western discourse—namely, a hostile obsession with Jews. The key to understanding this resurgence is not to be found among jihadi webmasters, basement conspiracy theorists, or radical activists. It is instead to be found first among the educated and respectable people who populate the international news industry; decent people, many of them, and some of them my former colleagues...

In all of 2013 the Israeli-Palestinian conflict claimed 42 lives—that is, roughly the monthly homicide rate in the city of Chicago. Jerusalem, internationally renowned as a city of conflict, had slightly fewer violent deaths per capita last year than Portland, Ore., one of America’s safer cities. In contrast, in three years the Syrian conflict has claimed an estimated 190,000 lives, or about 70,000 more than the number of people who've died in the Arab-Israeli conflict since it began a century ago.

News organizations have nonetheless decided that this conflict is more important than, for example, the more than 1,600 women murdered in Pakistan last year (271 after being raped and 193 of them burned alive), the ongoing erasure of Tibet by the Chinese Communist Party, the carnage in Congo (more than 5 million dead as of 2012) or the Central African Republic, and the drug wars in Mexico (death toll between 2006 and 2012: 60,000), let alone conflicts no one has ever heard of in obscure corners of India or Thailand. They believe Israel to be the most important story on earth, or very close.

As with Ferguson, the reporters have an agenda for the Israeli conflict, and the truth interferes with the agenda.

Therefore, the truth is never going to be told by the current crop of reporters/news organizations.

Portland, Ore., one of America’s safer cities.

That statement alone discredits the entire article. The mayor, Charlie Hales, is a far-left DemonRAT. In fact the whole city is under the thumb of fascist 'RATs and union goons. It may be among the most unsafe places in all of the 57 states. Crime, muggings and assaults breed where leftists are the majority.

This is reminiscent of the reporting on the government shutdown. The GOP offered to negotiate. The administration would not give an inch and would not even hold discussions. The administrative branch even brought up the threat of “shutdown” first. But it was the GOP which was blamed for the shutdown.

But, and this ‘but’ comes up whenever I read such an article, what is the solution? Can outlier reporters overcome the likes of AP and Reuters? Without the mainstream media’s honesty, the masses will continue to condemn Israel for their dastardly acts of self defense. So I ask again, what is the solution, short of a Second Coming?

Outstanding article! Thanks for posting.

That the media has an agenda that has nothing to do with reporting the facts is nothing new to us conservatives. But this article shows how that agenda can easily end up in millions of deaths.

It is another example of just how dangerous the Politically Correct group think culture can be.

Everyone thinks the MSM is anti-Semitic because of the way they cover the Jewish-Arab conflict.

While there may be a grain of truth to that charge, the most likely reason for their bias is because Israel is a democracy. The MSM instinct is to oppose democracies.

They deliberately ignore the fact that democracies are the only reason the free media exists.

[Portland] may be among the most unsafe places in all of the 57 states.

Got a link for that?

Portland's 2012 murder rate was 3.3/100k. Compare that to, say, Dallas's 12.4 or Detroit's 54.6.

Dallas is leftist dominated as is, of course, Detroit. DemonRAT cities are crime-infested cesspools. Good areas are where Conservatism is triumphant such as Wasilla, AK and Branson, MO. I’m surmise that neither have much crime.

False; it does not discredit the entire article. The point is that American cities, not states, are unsafe and have a higher level of violence. It is not so because of the left wing politics of the city residents. It is due to the lawlessness and violence of certain subgroups in those cities, who are alienated from God and the normal civilization that occurs in families. One of the safest American cities is Burlington, Vermont, which is too small and not diverse enough to really argue the case for America's failed cities.

Wasilla has a population of less than 10,000 people, yet in 2011, its murder rate exceeded Dallas. So did the assault rate. Branson's murder rate is almost as high as Dallas and its assualt rate is 5 to 6 time higher than Dallas.
