A firearms instructor has died after he was shot by a nine-year-old girl when she fired an Uzi at a shooting range in the Arizona desert.

Mohave County sheriff’s officials said 39-year-old Charles Vacca, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, died at the hospital on Monday after he was shot at the Last Stop outdoor shooting range.

Mohave County Sheriff Jim McCabe told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that Vacca was standing next to the girl when she pulled the trigger. The gun recoiled and it went over her head.

The paper reported that the girl had successfully fired the 9mm weapon several times in “single-shot” mode before Vacca changed the setting to “fully automatic” mode.

Very foolish not to have your hands on the weapon along with the shooter the first time someone completely unfamiliar with the recoil...Unfortunately he won’t get another chance and the girl will be harmed for life...Sad...

Well, I feel a lot sadder for the little girl.

As it appears, she was innocent of any wrongdoing, but it’s going to take a lot to live with what she did.

There was an incident at the range where the instructor was standing behind the shooter, while the shooter was shooting an sks. Ten round mag, one at a time semi auto. The pin was rough and somewhat rusted, it froze in the bolt, went full auto, and, yup, the instructor got his head blown off while standing behind the shooter.

Roger that.

I don't like to be anywhere near anyone shooting, that is not demonstrably proficient in handling the firearm being shot.

I’ve taught children to shoot over the years. One thing in common is that if you don’t stop them they will often “sweep” you once they are done shooting even if you remind them not to.

If you are looking/waiting for it then you can stop it ahead of time and make a cautionary tale of it.

Anyone under 10 gets .22 semi-auto only. I could not imagine giving a little girl something with a full auto switch.

Another example of a “trained expert” screwing up. Sad for everyone.

I am a man with decent strength. But unlike the military, I don’t have the money to waste bullets like they do. .308 packs some punch against quite a bit of game out there, pretty devastating if it ever hits a human, too.

I was just watching a Youtube video last night about “range jerks”. They are people who give unqualified/untrained individuals too large of caliber firearms to shoot. A girl died this same way last year in Missouri at a range when an instructor gave her a 50 caliber revolver to shoot.

My kids go through a progression of weapons. Air rifle, followed by air pistol, then .22 rifle, and .22 pistol. After that comes a .223 with only one round, and it’s a very long sequence and time before they get to automatic weapons (actually never). I don’t want some exciting moment to remember; I want shooting to be something they do well and take very seriously. Several people made a broad range of serious mistakes, and in my opinion a 9 y/o shooting an Uzi with more than one round was one of those errors.

Is that .22 conversion kit only for the select fire G3 or does it work on the semi only 91?

Will work in the G3 and the 91 but think you gotta fudge with itfor the 91.
No permanent changes.

Does not work in CETME due to the barrel trunion, could be made to work but I hate destroying history.

This is the instructor’s fault.

I don’t know any instruction with any common sense who does not stand behind a student.

He also does not seem familiar with the firearm either. Who does not know that the thing has a tendency to rise?

And who does not suspect that it might be a problem for a nine year old girl?

Our state civil rights group just put up a disclaimer to the list of instructors on their site.
