Surf's Up - Will there be a GOP wave in the Senate—or a wipeout?
Politico ^ | 8/25/2014 | Larry Sabato

So where’s the wave? This is President Obama’s sixth-year-itch election. The map of states with contested Senate seats could hardly be better from the Republicans’ vantage point. And the breaks this year—strong candidates, avoidance of damaging gaffes, issues such as Obamacare and immigration that stir the party base—have mainly gone the GOP’s way, very unlike 2012

A number of states have votes on legalizing marijuana on the ballot, which will get more young Dems out to vote.

I don't think the Reps will gain control of the Senate. The GOP Congressional leadership is terrible. And let's see what happens when Obama legalizes 6 million illegals next week. The GOPe will make a weak objection about process rather than the legalization itself, which many of them favor. It will be the same feckless reaction they gave to Obama's backdoor amnesty to the Dreamers. So far, 560,000 Dreamers have been legalized.

If you have any great ideas, I’m listening.

Take out the RINO trash. By hook or by crook.

There's an idea.

It won’t be either a wave or a wipeout. It’ll be a gentle ripple.

GOP will net +4 in the Senate and hold the House.

Virginia -- Ed Gillespie (R) vs. Mark Warner (D)

As one of the Senatorial "Sainted Ones," Warner will be in the Senate as long as he chooses, or until he's carted out of there horizontally.

Lots of people are growing tired of the two stale parties and see little difference between them. They both favor big government, are destroying the middle class, and are driving us deeper into debt. To be sure, national polls clearly show that most people think the country is heading in the wrong direction.

There are a number of festering problems out there that could be game changers in my opinion. A severe economic downturn that shakes Americans’ financial foundations and confidence in our political institutions might just be one of them. When seismic events such as that occur, people suddenly become receptive to new ideas.

Given the sad state of the country today, I would say that the two party, status quo system needs a fresh look.

We have Ed Gillespie taking on Mark Warner. There really is not a dime’s worth of difference between them. Gillespie refuses to go after Warner on the Gang of 8 bill. Why? Because Gillespie favors amnesty and increased immigration and guest workers. He could give a crap about the American worker.

Thats great.

But as long as there are no candidates talking about them you (we) might as well be howling at the moon.

And then it will turn into a stagnant, drainage pond that is its normal state. ;)

No mention from Gillespie on Warner signing the Gang of 8 bill that will destroy the American worker.

Yep... a stagnant, fetid mess.

But he got a bad scare in the primary and Cochran may yet lose in ole Miss

I think that might work on a younger Sen. that is hoping for a long career. A guy like McConnell who is already 72 will revert to his default setting once elected. The best thing is for the old guard to know they won't get our votes.

"In this era of Obama disasters, Democrats must be thankful for one thing: they have a weak and clueless opponent in the GOP."

How much of the GOP is clueless and how much of it is made up of collaborators who would rather support the Democrats than see Conservatives win?

Roberts screwed up on Obamacare, for reasons unknown and about which we often speculate (like a tough-love forcing of the American public to experience real consequences for their electoral decisions), but is still to the Right of Sandra Day O’Connor. AND we got Justice Alito, who is superb.

It doesn't matter about overall history, or the few judges we've gotten that are solid. The vote of our lifetimes was obamacare.

We are either a free people who's govt is subject to us, or we are serfs that are property of the state. Roberts decided we are the latter.

Oh there are plenty of things the GOP can run on - my question is why aren't they? All I hear are crickets.

Maybe I'm just not hearing it out here on the west coast.

For a wipeout to happen, it will come down to independent voters. If they show up in good numbers, they almost certainly will be voting "R" to show displeasure with Obama and the Democrats. It's anyone's guess as to whether they will be motivated enough to vote, though; if it is just GOP voters voting for the GOP, then all bets are off given the GOPe's efforts to tick off the base.

But the point is that until Reid pulled the trigger on the Nuclear Option the Senate GOP, even tho in the minority, had done a good option of bottling up Obama judicial appointments to preserve Conservative majorities on lowe courts. People just don’t get the level of damage done by packing the DC Appeals Court with those three Liberal extremists.

What did McConnell do afterwards. He told the media that if the Pubs win the majority they would reinstate the rule.

Did McConnell shut down the Senate with procedural delays and arcane parliamentary tactics? No! He went on like nothing had changed.

Maybe they can get the moderates to pick up the slack making phone calls, walking precincts and all that. Don’t ask me how. I don’t recall actually ever meeting a moderate doing any of that stuff.
