Ohio senator: Boycott Burger King
The Hill ^ | August 25, 2014 | Peter Schroeder

Posted on 08/25/2014 11:47:34 AM PDT by jazusamo

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) is urging consumers to boycott Burger King over reports that the fast food chain is eyeing a tax-cutting move to Canada.

Brown, an outspoken corporate critic, said people hankering for a burger should head to Wendy’s or White Castle, two Ohio-based chains that aren’t looking to shrink their tax bill via a so-called “corporate inversion.”

“Burger King’s decision to abandon the United States means consumers should turn to Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers or White Castle sliders,” he said in a statement. “Burger King has always said ‘Have it Your Way’; well my way is to support two Ohio companies that haven’t abandoned their country or customers.”

Burger King is discussing a merger with the Canadian food chain Tim Hortons, which would allow the burger giant to move its headquarters up north to take advantage of Canada’s 15 percent corporate tax rate, well below the 35 percent rate in the United States.

The move, if it comes through, would be the latest in the growing inversion trend, which has U.S. companies acquiring or merging with foreign counterparts with an eye toward avoiding higher U.S. taxes.

The move has come under heavy political criticism, and President Obama has said he is looking at ways to curb the deals through executive action.

Brown, a member of the Senate Finance Committee who could take over the Banking Committee in the next Congress, said Monday that Congress should push for a minimum global corporate tax rate.

Setting a country-by-country minimum tax base would help keep American companies in the U.S. and entice further investment, and also discourage countries from trying to slash their rates as low as possible, he argued. He also called on U.S. policymakers to lower their rate, which now stands at the highest level in the world.

“This kind of common sense reform will close down tax havens that cost our country revenue and cost American jobs. Lowering the statutory corporate tax rate would put companies on a level playing field with foreign competitors and reduce the incentive for them to shift jobs and profits overseas. Creating a global minimum tax rate will increase investment in the United States, raise revenue, and prevent a global race-to-the-bottom,” he said.

The problem apparently is that the US has the highest global corporate tax rate. If the “global community” had a minimum tax rate it would most likely keep growing. Competition between countries is better and obviously we should cut our corporate tax rate, and dump sherrod brown and those of his ilk.

Does the Senator even know that the overwhelming majority of BK patrons don’t even know he’s a senator and could care less where BK’s corp. HQ is located?

Recall the Wendy’s franchiser in North Carolina who supported Chik-Fil-A and was stomped on by the Wendy’s corporate national HQ.

Aye, laddie you have asked the right question. Allow me.

Canada has NO federal or provincial school lunch program. No federal Department of Education. Unemployment benefits run for 26 weeks, that's it.

Canada has one federal police agency (RCMP) one spy agency (CSIS) and one signals intercept agency. Federal agencies like Agriculture and Fisheries do not have separate SWAT teams.

I could go on, but I'm sure you get the picture. Canada's federal government is probably about 25% too big, but PM Harper is making it smaller. The US federal government is 4 times too big and getting bigger. Smaller government=less need for taxes.

Canada has a taxpayer (there is only one taxpayer) funded health care system. There are no deductibles or co-pays for care. The government in each province decides what is covered and what isn't. Generally all hospital stays, clinics, doctor visits, and emergency care is covered 100%. "Mandated coverage" is unheard of because care is either covered or it isn't, by government fiat. If it isn't you can buy it at a private clinic or go to the US and pay for it.

Some provinces also pay for prescription drugs. Where I live over 65 get drugs paid for after a $100 a year deductible payment.

That said, care is rationed through waiting periods. Seeing a specialist, getting to see an emergency doctor or getting elective surgery can take some time. Americans would be appalled by this but people in Canada are used to this system and they like it, by and large.

"good luck finding a doctor"

Are you sure about that? They are advertising for patients with street signs in my city. Lots of them.

I have to agree with you. My daughter and I love their chicken sandwiches. Years ago, BK marketed a fish sandwich they called “The Whaler,” and it was yummy. They discontinued it and replaced it with a rank fish sandwich - BK Big Fish, and it is one nasty, tasting sandwich.

If true I applaud Burger King, and thank them for avoiding passing on to me the confiscatory taxation that the loathsome commie Sherrod Brown would impose on them.
If they have any brains in Ohio they'll send this BROWN CLOWN packing at the next election.
