California: Insurers must cover elective abortions

Health insurance companies in California may not refuse to cover the cost of abortions, state insurance officials have ruled in a reversal of policy stemming from the decision by two Catholic universities to drop elective abortions from their employee health plans.

Although the federal Affordable Care Act does not compel employers to provide workers with health insurance that includes abortion coverage, the director of California’s Department of Managed Health Care said in a letter to seven insurance companies on Friday that the state Constitution and a 1975 state law prohibits them from selling group plans that exclude the procedure. The law in question requires such plans to encompass all “medically necessary” care.

“Abortion is a basic health care service,” department director Michelle Rouillard wrote in the letter. “All health plans must treat maternity services and legal abortion neutrally.”

Fantastic. Insurers would then have an incentive to offer subsidized, free, or possibly even negative-priced sterilizations. (”We’ll credit you $50 if you agree to this procedure!!”)

I’m pretty sure the vast majority (like 99%+) of abortions are NOT medically necessary. I’m not a doctor. I can’t claim all abortions are unnecessary, but I daresay the vast majority are entirely elective.

They are all medically necessary to prevent the woman from being punished with the child...

The Catholic bishops should ask that all loyal Catholics - and any sympathetic Protestants - convene at the state capital to protest this policy on such-and-such a date.

The vast majority of abortions are elective, i.e., are not intended to protect the mother against a life-threatening situation.

The Catholic universities should just tell the state government to go to hell and refuse to cover the so-called “procedure,” which in actuality is the murder of an unborn child.

The truth is that abortion proponents, and this would include anyone and everyone who claims merely to be “pro-choice,” have a conscience; and their conscience tells them that what they advocate and, in many cases, do is most definitely wrong (we used to call it sin, before that became unfashionable).

The solution, for them, is to implicate as many others in their evil as possible, and thus assuage to a degree their own conscience. When it doesn’t work for them their only alternative to work all the harder to make their evil normal and acceptable to all, even if people must be forced to accept this evil against their conscience, as if somehow this will make what is so plainly wrong right.

How is elective abortion medically necessary?

How is elective abortion medically necessary?

It's considered such by those who define "reproductive justice" as "the right NOT to be a parent."

That depends very much on your point of view. If you agree with the liberals that killing as many minority children by aborting them is a good thing (racial cleansing, anyone?) then it is fine. If you value freedom and all lives then it is morally rotten. Now you know why Governor Moonbean signed the law.

I want to make sure I understand. Does this mean that California insurers will be required to pay for an abortion requested by a perfectly healthy mother who has a perfectly healthy fetus, conceived through voluntary sex?

No it's not. I don't think this would survive a court challenge.

Since Section 1 of the 14th Amendment applies the Constitution’s enumerated personal protections to the states, California can’t force employers to ignore their convictions and pay for abortions any more than the feds can force businesses like Hobby Lobby to pay for abortions imo.

What am I overlooking?

The huge irony: abortionists hate liberals far worse than Christians do.
