UK Plans New Law to Deal With Islamist Extremism

In the wake of the recent beheading of a US journalist by a suspected British Islamic State militant in Iraq, the UK is planning a tougher law to tackle threat of Islamist terrorism in the country which includes stripping citizenship of naturalised Britons who are fighting overseas.

It will also have new orders for banning extremist groups that fall short of the legal threshold for terrorist proscription.

UK Home Secretary Theresa May, in an article for the 'Daily Telegraph', wrote, "People who insist on travelling to fight in Syria and Iraq will be investigated by the police and security services. For those who have dual nationality, I have the power to strip them of their citizenship and exclude them from the country."

"Following the recent Immigration Act, I can, in certain circumstances, remove citizenship from naturalised Britons who are fighting overseas and exclude them too," she said.

The new measures are aimed at curtailing the activities of radical Islamist preachers whose extreme rhetoric currently does not constitute a crime.

"I am looking again at the case for new banning orders for extremist groups that fall short of the legal threshold for terrorist proscription, as well as for new civil powers to target extremists who seek to radicalise others," she said.

"We will be engaged in this struggle for many years, probably decades. We must give ourselves all the legal powers we need to prevail," May wrote.

While details are yet to emerge, the new power will be designed to restrict extremists' behaviour and language.

As with an anti-social behaviour orders (ASBO), it could result in a criminal conviction carrying a jail term if breached.

May is also planning to make it illegal for British citizens to join extremist groups that preach violent views, but are not directly involved in terrorism.

I'd suggest that when it's reported that the number 1 name for UK newborns is Mohammad, well, then, it's just a tad late...

Yes, virtually nothing. Cameron was more worried about exporting gay marriage around the world.

Make sure they get the addresses of these jihadists so they can send them a stern warning letter threatening penalties. /sarcasm

They should expel from the country all males over 6 years old who have Mohammad as one of their names.

In USA

strip citizenship from any who live in enemy country and stop all Social Security, Medicare, disability, and other benefits they may be receiving.

ditto for any who go to fight for an enemy regardless of whom they are fighting.

Congress, the peoples’ house, shall determine who is our enemy, not the Department of State.

She won’t do anything.

All they gotta do is scream “racist!” and the cowering English will be diving for cover.

Rivers of Blood indeed...

elpadre:" Congress, the peoples’ house, shall determine who is our enemy, not the Department of State."

EXACTLY !!
The State Dept. and this administration has made so many International blunders, that now we are talking about bombing ISIS (formerly known as al Quada),
the very group that the StateDept. and CIA have been arming and training for the last four years .
ISIS now has our military vehicles ,weaons , and tactics, and has modified and refined them into a "scorched earth" policy of genocide.

stripping naturalised citizens of British citizenship who are fighting overseas

That would make sense. Why should someone be a citizen if their loyalties are elsewhere, or if they're paid mercenaries somewhere else? It would be great if the US did that. I'd also strip away citizenship of those who had dual citizenship somewhere else.

I have a better idea. Scrap the Human Rights Act and reinstate the death penalty for treason, abolished by Tony Bliar in 1998. Apply it liberally to those who commit acts of treason against the United Kingdom.

> It's a start.

It's a diversion: 'I have to show the world there is a Briton fighting against the Islamic State'

This action seems almost directly related to the story of a naturalized Briton fighting for the "wrong" side.

Right - play nice with them. Then they’ll see how nice the people in the UK are and not blow them up so much.

Isn’t any criticism of Islam a hate crime in the UK? My guess is they will make everyone else wear symbols on their sleeves to not offend the poor muslims.

Agree.

Unfortunately, both houses of congress have depended on popular votes for a hundred years. Every member is loathe to risk alienating muzzie support. Keeping one’s job is job #1. There is no second.

Love that 17th Amendment.

This is the current law in the US:It took some digging but I found it:
POTENTIALLY EXPATRIATING ACTS

Section 349 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1481), as amended, states that U.S. citizens are subject to loss of citizenship if they perform certain specified acts voluntarily and with the intention to relinquish U.S. citizenship. Briefly stated, these acts include:

1.obtaining naturalization in a foreign state (Sec. 349(a)(1) INA);

2.taking an oath, affirmation or other formal declaration to a foreign state or its political subdivisions (Sec. 349(a)(2) INA);

3.entering or serving in the armed forces of a foreign state engaged in hostilities against the U.S. or serving as a commissioned or non-commissioned officer in the armed forces of a foreign state (Sec. 349(a)(3) INA);

4.accepting employment with a foreign government if (a) one has the nationality of that foreign state or (b) an oath or declaration of allegiance is required in accepting the position (Sec. 349(a)(4) INA);

5.formally renouncing U.S. citizenship before a U.S. diplomatic or consular officer outside the United States (sec. 349(a)(5) INA);

6.formally renouncing U.S. citizenship within the U.S. (but only under strict, narrow statutory conditions) (Sec. 349(a)(6) INA);

7.conviction for an act of treason (Sec. 349(a)(7) INA).
