There are fears of a "possible massacre" in Iraq amid a UN warning about the situation in a town besieged by militants.
The UN's Special Envoy to the country said immediate action was needed to protect the people of Amerli, which has been overwhelmed by Islamic State (IS) fighters.
Nickolay Mladenov said reports "confirm that people are surviving in desperate conditions" and there is "unspeakable suffering".
Shia Turkmen residents of the town, in the Salaheddin province north of Baghdad, has been cut off from government-held territory for months.
Iraq's prime minister designate Haidar al Abadi has promised aid for them.
Meanwhile, Kurdish forces have been struggling to defend themselves against IS fighters across northeast Iraq and are appealing for more international help.

I fear there are massacres going on thru out Iraq that are not being reported.
But....But.....Obama said we stopped them.
As opposed to the actual massacres which have been carried out continually for years?
But...but...moozlums are a peaceful people with a religion of peace. How can this be happening??????????
If they aren’t radical muslims, warlord africans, or raging socialists in asia or south america, the UN will not so much as lift a finger to help them.
The UN only will support and help regimes loyal to their socialist/elitest causes, and any third world dictator who will help fill their coffers.
Sadly, thanks to “Group Obama” we don’t have the means to stop any of it.
Who was it who kept repeating “Islam is a peaceful religion” right after the towers came down? Mmmmmm.
This is Europe in 1938/39 all over and while theres some help going on theres far more rhetoric than substance. If there ever was a just cause for war this is it. At the rate this is going the dead innocents will number a million or more. I sincerely hope history will judge the current leaders as harshly as they deserve.
Since someone will undoubtedly say they should have been able to hep themselves let me say this. Its exactly the same with the leaders of Iraq and all the other Muslim nations as with our politicians. They’re more concerned with their own power than anything else. We know this. Theres no question about it. Thats no reason to permit these atrocities to continue. Its only a reason to change how we offer any aid at all in the future. No more simply handing it to the governments. If they can’t handle that one simple prerequisite then they get nothing.
