Yeah, this one actually looks fairly well organized though. I remember a few years ago they organized a charity giveaway in a park in Atlanta for school supplies. All the soccer Moms dutifully went to Target stores and bought up a bunch of stuff and dropped it off at the park in the morning - likely envisioning a bunch of polite Mom’s with their kids that afternoon with the school list from their teachers - carefully selecting what would be needed.
When the afternoon “giveaway” portion of the event rolled around it was a free-for-all. Big fat ladies fighting over the backpacks and more expensive items with no regard for actual need. They showed one lady on TV toting off about a dozen backpacks (all she could carry). She probably sold them back in the neighborhood for cheap.
I remember that my dad was laid off from his factory job for a three month period in 1960. First day of layoff, he got a job working for an area dairy farmer, painting his huge milk barn and some of his other properties. He paid my dad $1.00 per hour and paid me half that for helping my dad. I was 15 years old.
Dad was thrilled to get the work so he could feed his family of 8.
No welfare line for him - ever.
