James Foley’s brother: The U.S. could have done more for Jim

The brother of American journalist James Foley said Friday morning that the U.S. government could have done more to attempt to free his brother and other American hostages from the Islamic militant group ISIL.

“There’s more that could have been done directly on Jim’s behalf,” Michael Foley, 38, told Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric in an exclusive interview from his parents’ home in New Hampshire. “I really, really hope that Jim’s death pushes us to take anther look at our approach to terrorist and hostage negotiation.”

Foley, a 40-year-old journalist who was covering the Syrian conflict for GlobalPost, was kidnapped nearly two years ago near the Syria-Turkey border. ISIL, also called ISIS, released a grisly video of his beheading Tuesday, claiming they killed him in retaliation for U.S. air strikes in the region.

But another issue was money. The group had also captured French and Spanish journalists, but freed them after their governments paid ransoms through intermediaries. The U.S. government refused to negotiate or pay the group on behalf of Foley and other Americans captives. ISIL emailed Michael Foley and demanded 100 million euro—a sum he called “ridiculous”—for his brother’s release.

“I just feel strongly that more can be done moving forward,” Michael Foley said.

When I listened to Foley’s last statement, it creeped me out because he sounded mad at AMerica and being an American.

The guy was a journalist, doing his job. They are holding about 20 Americans, most of them not dumb do-gooders but people who were doing a job in the ME.

The only way to make them stop kidnapping Americans is to make it so hard on them that they wouldn’t even dream of it. Blow them away. Seize every single one of them we find in Europe or even in the ME and kill them. Bomb the socks off anything or anyone that supports them.

Sorry, but that’s the only way to stop kidnappings. And if they use the hostages as human shields...well, they were going to kill them anyway. I’d rather die knowing that my death was taking along a number of jihadis and stopping the terror than knowing it was going to be shown on TV to boost their recruiting efforts.

Those weren’t his words, but those of his captors.

The American people are looking for a few good leaders, and from this picture, I think they have found her.

LeMay, sounded repudiated by the American people when he ran for VP in 1968

Yes. I bet I can make you say anything I want if I have you captive for two years and go thru a series of mock executions.

Lenny Bruce had a routine about a man who is brought to a room where he proclaims that he would never betray his country. Then he says (I'm paraphrasing from memory), "What are they doing to that guy over there? Why are they putting that funnel in his ass? What are they doing with that molten lead? They're pouring it in the funnel? The funnel that's in his ass? They're pouring hot lead in his ass? They're giving him a hot lead enema? Okay, I'll tell you anything. I'll tell you about my mother. I'll make up secrets."

I heard a variation where Bruce says that when faced with the hot lead enema, he would make a shoeshine rag out of the American flag.

If that quote is accurate, Obama is an idiot for comparing a “jayvee team”, and later “them” both plural nouns to a singular “Kobe Bryant”. He is a “graduate” of two ivy league schools. HUH? Well maybe the _resident thinks Bryant could beat the “jayvee” team by himself?

I know this family, but even if I didn’t, my position, especially in the 48 hours after something like this, is to give them a pass and not criticize whatever it is that they say.

Wallace/LeMay. The liberal press and the RINOs destroyed the careers of both men. What did we get in return. A very moderate republican that carried on LBJ’s great society programs and although a fine commander-in-chief got bogged down in the Watergate fiasco and had to resign, which directly led to the dunce Jimmy Carter being elected.

You go to the land of snakes, you should expect to be bitten.

Depending on .Gov is futile.

Mr. Foley knew what he was getting into by working in the AO. The US does not usually negotiate with terrorist. Other countries tend to pay ransoms ans such, we have chosen not to do that sort of thing as a whole.

Mr. Foley knew what he was getting into by working in the AO.

So that excuses what happened to him? Do you feel the same way about our voluntary military or police or firemen? They know what they are getting into as well.

Sure, I knew by signing up with the Army that I could be killed. That is the nature of it.

Nobody should expect anything different.

No, the real lesson of Benghazi is that this administration will not protect Americans abroad; not even a US ambassador.

>>James Wright Foley’s brutal public murder should serve as a cautionary tale to all progressive “infidels” who decry others as “Islamophobes.”

According to Daniel Greenfield, writing for Front Page Magazine, “Foley came to Syria to support the Sunni Islamist rebels against the Syrian government.

He cheered on the Sunni Muslim terrorists fighting to ethnically cleanse the Christians of Aleppo. In the conflict between Israel and Hamas, his tweets and retweets were chock full of pro-terrorist propaganda. <<

I spent 8 years in the USN, including a year in Vietnam. Just because someone volunteered to serve in a dangerous occupation doesn’t diminish their death or sacrifice. I have heard the Left dismiss the deaths of US military personnel with sentiments similar to the ones expressed by you. I find it reprehensible.

I never said anything to attack Mr. Foley's character or lessen his value. But, his value is the same as everyone else. He knew what he was doing, just like you did when you entered the military.

Those are the rules when you go into the jungle. And above all else, .gov does not care about you nor should you ever depend on it coming to save you.

Americans know better; our rustic individualism is part of our core.

The Ambassador was visiting from Tripoli. Given all of the circumstances surrounding conditions in Benghazi including the security wavier and the conclusion by the Country Team that the facility was indefensible and that they could not depend on the host government for protection, we should not have been there.

Billions of dollars have been spent on security for our diplomatic facilities abroad. But it all depends on the ability of the host government to come to your aid when under duress. If you cannot have such an assurance, you shouldn't be there period. That is the best defense.

King Obamagabe should have went on national TV and said the following “I have witnessed a brutal decapitation of one our American citizens. Let the world know that America does not back down from a fight and this type of despicable evil. The full weight of the US military will be thrown at these radical, murdering 6th century madman. I have ordered today the US Marines and the 82d and 101st Airborne Divisions to prepare for an extended deployment to Iraq and Syria. For every American that is decapitated they will decapitate two of the enemy. We are now in a state of war and I have called for a joint session of Congress to legalize this action. Thank you very much and God bless America”!!

Sounds GREAT to me.
