Fewer people applied for U.S. unemployment benefits last week, another sign the job market is improving.
The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly claims for jobless aid fell 14,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 298,000. The prior weeks figures were revised up slightly to 311,000.
The less-volatile four-week average rose 4,750 to 300,750. It remains close to levels that predate the Great Recession of 2007-2009.
Applications are a proxy for layoffs.
Employers arent just keeping workers. Theyre hiring at a pace last seen during the tech boom. They added 209,000 jobs in July, the sixth straight month that job gains exceeded 200,000. The economy has generated 244,000 new jobs a month since February.
The recent hiring has encouraged more people to look for work, causing Julys unemployment rate to rise to 6.2 percent from 6.1 percent in June. The government counts only people searching for jobs as unemployed.

More and more people have been kicked off the rolls.
I was kicked off the rolls 4 times in one year. Never did get ANYWHERE near 52 weeks of unemployment, let alone “99” weeks.
Then again, I’m white.
Still out. Still putting in applications.
FUBO
And I've dropped the price I'm asking for the Brookly Bridge. LOL! Anyone who actually believes this garbage the way the "media" does is an idiot.
So 0 how many did you remove from the workforce that are probablly pointing a gun to their temple right at this moment?
It’s always “down” before it’s up.
I don’t know who got these wildly extended unemployment entitlements that freepers are always crabbing about. My husband had the benefits for less than a year. He’s still out; he’s still putting in applications. White, executive material, 62 years old.
Good news! The clinic in Nigeria where Ebola broke out is reporting no deaths in the clinic, which closed 2 months ago. This proves that the Ebola pandemic is petering out! Let your heart not be troubled!
The government even stopped letting me file my unemployment status even with me knowing/accepting that no more checks would be coming.
This bit that “people have stopped looking” is a dirty lie.
They don’t want accurate figures.
My 401k savings are almost depleted.
I am unemployed.
Fortunately, I'm employed, but plan to take early SS in two years when I hit 62. I'm just tired of the BS, and I work with great people.
They've got accurate figures, they just don't report them.
Yes, he has. Of course, that doesn’t pay many bills!
I’m very sorry to hear that. So sorry. I’m the one with the 401 but I’m not near retirement age. I’m not going to break it and take a huge loss. We live in interesting times.
I’m not near retirement age either. I’ve had to pay the 10% penalty and taxes on top of that.
Just remember when things get tough - you are not alone. People just don’t talk much about their troubles...
