The Associated Press Stylebook states that in reports referring to a persons age, the figure for the age number should be used. It also states that reports should use man or woman for individuals 18 and older.
Why, then, are AP reports on the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown solely referring to him as a teen and teenager? ADVERTISEMENT
Dont know if Missouri teen shot with hands up, reads one AP headline from Monday. County autopsy: Unarmed teen shot 6 to 8 times, reads another.
And an excerpt from yet another AP story, emphasis added: Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon lifted a curfew but ordered the National Guard to step in to help restore order. Holder over the weekend ordered a federal medical examiner to perform a third autopsy on the teenager, Michael Brown.
Whats happening here?
One possibility: Referring to Brown as a teen and teenager harkens back to Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old black Florida teen who was also shot dead while unarmed. Like Browns shooting, that was an emotionally and racially charged event, which the media pored over for months.

Is the cop not really black? i thought that when his name was disclosed he was also determined to be a very capable black officer?
I have no idea. If the officer is black, I hadn't heard it reported as such. Even after they released his name.
But if he is black, they don't report it as such. If he is white, they would most assuredly mention that in every story.
The motivation to become a journalist is to promote your own importance. This implies, not telling the truth, but selling the idea that you, and all journalists, tell the public everything important. Why would you restrict yourself to the truth in that process? You know that everyone else in your profession will go along, as long as you do not compete on the basis that you are more factually reliable. Do that, and you put a target on your chest.
It looks to me like Eric the Holder plans to pin the cop with civil rights violation. The fix is in.
Tonight ABC and PBS used “teenager” while CBS used “man”. Good for CBS.
Cause if they used “boy” their cover would be blown.
Even the AP knows that they could not get away with calling him a "child".
why don’t they also mention he was 6-4 and 300 pounds everytimne?
same reason.
They just want to make a DDDIIIFFFFFFEEERRREEENNNCEEE!!!!
