Texas Gov. Rick Perry indicted, faces 99 years if convicted (Video)

According to the Associated Press, via the Huffington Post:

Perry was indicted on charges of abuse of official capacity, a first-degree felony with potential punishments of five to 99 years in prison, and coercion of a public servant, a third-degree felony that carries a punishment of two to 10 years.

Perry was a presidential hopeful in 2012, and is expected to make a run in 2016. Perry is a Republican; Lehmberg, who was sentenced to 45 days for driving while intoxicated, is a Democrat, and repeatedly refused the governor’s calls to resign.

What follows is booking footage from Lehmberg’s arrest.

There’s an old adage that a prosecutor can persuade a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich. This is because it’s solely within the prosecutor’s discretion as to what evidence is presented. Twitter user Charles Watson agrees.

Liberals Trying to Destroy Rick Perry With Bogus Indictment http://t.co/WuAHWwH1s7

Even David Axelrod, confidante and former senior aide to President Obama, thought the indictment was lame.

Unless he was demonstrably trying to scrap the ethics unit for other than his stated reason, Perry indictment seems pretty sketchy.

charges of abuse of official capacity, a first-degree felony with potential punishments of five to 99 years in prison, and coercion of a public servant,

That is EXACTLY what the Travis County District Attorney did by trying to get an indictment of Governor Perry.

Bogus charge, but it will likely tie him up through the 2016 election cycle, which is the intent after all.

If constitutionally permitted in Texas, Governor Perry should simply pardon himself.

So if he is found innocent does the accuser face the 99 years in prison?

... abuse of official capacity ... five to 99 years in prison...

In the mean time, 0bama is getting off scott free for much, much more "abuse of official capacity" than Perry ever could have done.
It's a witch hunt to prevent Perry from running for President.

Texas governors are historically very weak since Reconstruction. The governor isn't allowed to pardon ANYONE unless recommended to by a board.

Who is the awful whore in the drunken video? Until we get rid of these vulgar, insane Democrat politicians, our system will remain broken.

I am no fan of Perry, and would never support him, but he has every right to run for president. Now he runs with a number across his chest. Disgusting.

Potential penalty for a budget veto: 99 years, haha. No wonder many think the justice system is a joke.

Rosemary Lehmberg? Wasn't she at one time some drunken, fat, stupid lesbian excuse for a district attorney?

Well, I guess she still *is* drunk, fat stupid and lesbian, anyway.

Prior to a 1934 constitutional amendment, the Governor had independent pardon powers. The amendment removing these powers was added after Jim and Miriam Ferguson were accused of selling clemency during her term as Governor.

99 years for standing up to Obama. I was wondering how they were going to get him.

Obama et al are

REALLY

pushing to stir up a rebellion, no?

Leftists would LOVE patriots to rebel, because it would give them a reason to fulfill their fantasy of using the power of the state to punish and exterminate their political opponents.

What is the complexion of the board?

It might very well be that Governor Perry finds he gets a bump in the polls and will proceed to milk this.

You know, these perversions of the judicial process by the left are becoming truly threatening to our civil consensus as it undermines the rule law. We see what is going on in Ferguson, Missouri which so eerily parallels the history of Zimmerman in Florida. We saw what happened to Scooter Libby and, in Texas again, to Tom Delay.

We have a Supreme Court which has four guaranteed, reflexive votes in any given case sold out to the liberal line. We have witnessed multiple transparently partisan rulings in the lower courts, most recently in the DC Court of Appeals concerning Obamacare. We see the bizarre opinion of the Chief Justice distorting the Constitution and distorting the Affordable Care Act in order to save that pernicious legislation. Only the most naïve conservative would preserve faith in our judicial process as it is being applied.

If we continue to see the extortion of the judicial process in places like Ferguson, Missouri we will lose that which sets us apart from Iraq.

No rule of law, no civil society, no representative democracy.

This is an absolute travesty.

Texas Dems taking their cues either directly or indirectly from the White House’s use of the IRS to target foes.

Perry being punished for daring to try to stop the invasion of his state by Obama’s efforts to turn America into a third world country.

Nothing Perry did even comes close to the abuses of power that have regularly and systematically come out of the White House.

Courts have this concept called "standing", on which they routinely dismiss conservative challenges about anything.

Does a local prosecutor have "standing" to charge a sitting gov about how he conducts his office. i would have thought charges would need to come from a much higher level, like the legislature in impeachment hearings.
