The lions sit dazed in the shade of their damaged pen, while nearby the decayed carcasses of two vervet monkeys lie contorted on the grass of a Gaza zoo.
The animals were caught in the crossfire of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants that has killed more than 1,960 Palestinians and 67 people on the Israeli side.
In one enclosure a fly-covered pelican huddles in the corner with a duck. Opposite, a small crocodile sits motionless in an inch of stagnant water, next to the rotting corpse of a stork.

And if this atrocity seems familiar, it is. Sorry, I didn't have time to search for the threads about the locals eating the zoo animals, but I remember posting one. Or to do an extensive search on the zoo. But a few. That last link, over ten years ago.

Why would any country allow an export of a creature to the feral territory of Gaza? They are better off in the wild.
The wild pigs would eat Muslims though. I remember a WW2 vet telling once me in the closing days of the war he was on patrol and saw a pig eating a dead German soldier. “Will you look at that’’ he said to his buddies, “A pig eating a Kraut!’’
Very sad. Hamas should have thought of the Zoo animal’s welfare before assaulting Israel.
Ambrose Bierce wrote a short story about pigs eating the dead following Civil War battles. In the long run, we’re all carrion.

The Palestinians have a self created zoo that they wish living in and they don’t even try.
They would rather spend the money on weaponry so they can kill the Jews.
If the U.N.wanted to do something worthwhile they could rescue those starving animals and get them to a more civilized environment.

I can’t imagine this zoo was “beautiful” even before the bombing. Rusted rebar cage bars? And the cages are so small and non-naturalistic. Surely the animals were traumatized before even one bomb fell, just from these disgusting surroundings. It’s a dump. The remaining animals should be transported to Israel’s zoo vet clinics for their welfare. Even these animals were smuggled! With such dismal and inadequate housing for the animals, they had no business whatsoever importing animals for a “zoo”. Just add this to their list of lacking a scrap of humanity.
