Robbery ‘not related’ to why Michael Brown was initially stopped by Ferguson police

The unarmed black teen whose fatal shooting by police in a St. Louis suburb sparked violent protests was a suspect in a robbery moments before, but the deadly encounter was not sparked by the robbery, the city's police chief said Friday.

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson earlier Friday released documents alleging 18-year-old Michael Brown had been suspected of stealing a $48.99 box of cigars from a convenience store in a “strong-arm” robbery shortly before he was killed.

Jackson said at an afternoon press conference that Brown and his friend were stopped Saturday “because they were walking down the middle of the street blocking traffic.” …

“If that’s true then the BOLO would be a matter of record but since it was a petty theft of a few cigars odds are that there was no BOLO.”

Not petty theft, felony robbery and assault, 5-15 yrs in MO.

“..it was STRONG ARM ROBBERY which is a felony”.........

Saw the surveillance video this morning and from what I can tell, INDEED it was “SAR”. Unfortunatley for Brown, the penalty turned out to be more than adequate, saved a lot of court time and lots of money by not feeding that huge “Street Rat” for a few years. More unfortunate, the real costs will kick in when all this goes to trial, not to mention all the destruction the rest of the Street Rats will create before the dust settles.

There has to be more to this story than has come out and at this time cannot give an opinion +/- about the actual shooting. the only thing I know is a Street Rat is dead and a cop is in deep doodoo at the moment.

Cops have instincts about criminals... on some subconscious level this guy stood out to the cop.

This whole thing could have been avoided had a White Hispanic with a gun been in the store in the first place.

They haven’t stopped shooting jumbo thugs that attack them and attempt to take their gun though.

It might or not have been known to the officer. But it was known by Michael Brown that he'd just committed a robbery/assault. That might explain some of his aggressive actions that got him shot.

Why aren't the media bringing this up? It explains a lot. All except for the part that someone who just robbed a store and assaulted someone was walking down the middle of a street.

This police chief is not capable of dealing with the media. He should have stated that he will say nothing until the investigation is complete. That’s the line of the Obama administration in their many scandals, and the media is totally happy to drop the subject in question.

His aggressive actions prior to getting shot doesn’t fit the media’s narrative. Therefore, the mention of it was omitted.

since it was a petty theft of a few cigars odds are that there was no BOLO.

***********************************

If the store keeper called 911 to report the robbery, there was probably a BOLO. It would have been verbal, over the radio so it would be on the dispatcher tapes. The 911 tapes should have the call from the storekeeper and the call taker asking for a description of the perps (race, height, weight, clothing, any weapons, etc.) & which direction they were headed. This info would/should be broadcast to the cops over their radios.

What I haven’t seen yet is how long after the robbery did the officer run into MB & his friend - half hour? hour? more than that?

Read on a thread yesterday it was a matter of minutes - less that 15 or so - between the robbery and the altercation.

I'll scroll back through and repost it if I can find it again.

Thanks ..... less than 15 minutes .... I think that ‘amps up’ the interaction between MB & the cop. MB still on adrenaline from the robbery, the cop not knowing about it or just finding out about it as he came across the two.

The family lawyers etc say the robbery is smoke/mirrors and has nothing to do with the shooting .... it has EVERYTHING to do with the shooting because it goes to MB’s state of mind & how he reacted to the cop.

Exactly! It would be a logical explanation for the officer supposedly 'backing up' after the initial contact - the description of Mike & Co came across the radio.

If the store keeper called 911 to report the robbery

The storekeeper didn't make the call -- it was made by a customer.

I don't know how that would affect it.

Somehow I get the feeling that the storekeeper saw it as no big deal and didn't want to press the matter.

We only know what the PC and the kid he was with said — they were stopped because they were walking in the middle of the street.

The policeman who stopped Brown supposedly said that he heard a call to be on the lookout for two perps just as he saw Brown and his buddy walking down the street.

I'm not sure this is all that important. Think of it this way: Big Mike and his buddy feel like throwing their weight around the neighborhood. Big Mike does a minor shoplift and humiliates the store clerk, figuring it's not a cop-worthy big beef, and it's his due as big guy on the block. Then he and his buddy, laughing and prideful at how they abused the little Indian clerk, are walking down the centerline of the street, blocking traffic. Of course a cop is going to have words with them, whether or not he knows about the shoplift/robbery... and it proceeds from there.

What an ego-maniacal dumbass, especially if the cop didn't know, and the over-reaction was (as some have speculated) because these guys thought the store owner had called the cops. Way to stand out and get attention, strolling down the middle street and blocking traffic.

At least that's what I heard. It wasn't about jaywalking, or a foot off the curb.
